And another new release this weekend! Quote Weatherbot is a weather forecasting application that brings live weather updates back to vintage Macintosh computers. It displays the current weather conditions and provides a 7 day forecast of upcoming conditions. Website & download: http://manticore.nz/weatherbot Requirements: * Mac OS 7 - 10.11 or PC running Windows 98 - XP * A Motorola 68020 CPU or better * At least 2MB Ram * 2MB Disk Space --------------------------------------------------------------- Apparently it was built with RealBasic! I'll definitely give this a try this afternoon as I get back to my IIci. Some may remember that I whipped up this simple weather report years ago, but this looks much more sophisticated. Although it seems to be shareware (5$) to unlock all features, whatever that means. (I haven't tested it yet, as mentioned above) |

So, I just gave this a try on my IIci / System 7.1. It works! And pretty nicely too! Takes only a few seconds to load up, although I should mention I'm on a 68030 @ 40 Mhz. I bet it's not a pretty sight on a 68020 equipped LC ... Anyway, it's shareware in that if you pay 5$ for registration, you can unlock the 7-day forecast feature. I'd say EVERY new software for System 7 is worth 5 bucks, so what the heck. It uses Stripe for payment and requires JavaScript and a modern browser btw. I guess it's using a paid API to consistently deliver its data, and keeping those things running costs money. So for that and the wish to keep it going for the years to come I hope my 5$ will help at least a little. Speaking of keeping it running - unfortunately the URL of the service seems to be hard-coded. I couldn't discover a setting in the application. Maybe that could be added as a STR in the resource fork, so one could possibly change that in case the server goes down / development stalls for whatever reason? Unfortunately, as of version 1.1.0 it doesn't seem to support Umlauts. So if you enter "Gävle, Sweden" as you location it won't work, neither would "Bruckmühl, Germany". If I search for a town with no Ä,Ü,Ö in it, I do get nice results. All in all, weatherpot makes a nice addition to my startup folder. I like that it is small, simple, very Mac-like and does one thing and that thing well.

Boy oh boy, that is a very nice addition for System 7 (8,9,X). I downloaded it in Sheepshaver and it works very well. I love handy little useful pieces of software like this. I have a very applications running on every other system I use. For me every little add on such as this makes it so much easier to say "Oh, my System 7 can still be a daily driver!" I bought a registration right away. Of course that needs a modern browser, but then heck that is why we all have a phone right.
