Ok, "stupid question" time... As far as I know MacOS 9 itself doesn't have any "real" support for Altivec or multi-processors (unlike MacOS X)...it supports programs that use them, but doesn't/can't itself take advantage. I'm sure CodeWarrior can GENERATE AltiVec code, but can the C/C++ compilers make use of it to speed up things while compiling? And, it MIGHT be able to generate code for multiple processors...but I have my doubts...but it is much less likely it can do parallel compiling. MacOS 9 can only run non-gui, non-toolbox tasks on a second processor...and thus the various compiler plugins couldn't be traditionally written. Does anyone know if the above is true for sure or not? There is some documentation referring to multiprocessing, but only for the last couple versions, not CodeWarrior 7 or older... ---- All of this is (of course) in the context of my attempting to build Classilla. The original author stated that they used an upgraded dual MDD G4 under MacOS 9...but did they get much (or any) advantage from two cpus? I know there's just about zero chance the more esoteric parts of the build process could...ie ToolServer, parts of MPW, and MacPerl. Do any of you guys have a dual CPU machine that can boot into MacOS 9? If so, let me know if you'd be willing to try some benchmarking, which'd show this for sure one way or the other... (I'm still trying to find the correct drivers for my PowerLogix PowerForce 133 to get it to boot MacOS 9...it sounds like the card was relatively rare.) |

I don't believe I got much benefit from it when building, no, but the second CPU was there. Multiprocessing Services was, as you say, quite limited in what it enabled.
