I was just curious what people are using for an email client with 7.6. Most servers today want authentication which is not done by many good email clients of  the System 7 era.

Baton is an authentication utility that works fairly well for providing authentication services to older email clients. However I am not aware of any email clients for System 7.6 that do that on their own.

thanks

I've not actually tried this Baton of which you speak.  Does it work?

Yes Baton works well. It works with both 68K machine and PPC machines. I believe it does require OpenTransport. It allows one to work with older email clients.

Besides authentication though older clients do not do well with a lot of spam and many lack sufficient features to do a good job handling and sorting for large volumes of email.

Like many applications built for the older OS, it has not been updated in some time. If I remember correctly it only supports one type of authentication, so I am not suprised to hear that it fails with some newer servers.

A friend of mine runs and email service on his network set up using some new authentication method and I have not had any luck using Baton with it either. It does work with Earthlink, and at least a year ago, it was also working with .Mac mail.

I have tried a few of the free e-mail programs ie. claris e-mailer and the old eudora. I couldnt get either to work well. Claris kept giving me a streaming error and eudora wouldnt pull in the mail. I have however had good luck with the built in e-mail program that is in netscape 4.79. The connection to my e-mail server was fast and flawless and the browser works well too.

Netscape 4.8 works under 7.6.1 as well.

I would have to disagree about the browsers being any good, though.

Use the installer found on this site, not the official Netscape installer.

I helped a couple of people setup their pop mail with OE 4.5 on System 7.6.1 and a few others had 8.1 so they use newer mail programs.

In either case, they haven't had problems. It may just be that OE may be compatible with their hosted mail server and outgoing mail from their ISP.

Dan, have you or anyone else tried OE 4.5?

I can't really find OE 4.5.  Does it install Appearance Manager?

Well I found Outlook Express 4.5, and just as I remembered, it doesn't work on any of my services that require SMTP authentication, and even worse, it can't be used with IE 5 (each program installs new extensions over each other's extensions every time they are launched).

I'm working on getting Netscape 4.8 mail component working, especially now that I've been using Netscape 4.8 as my main System 7 browser anyway.

I have a PB1400c/166 running OS 7.6.1. Like authors of previous posts I had difficulties with various e-mail clients, such as an old version of Eudora, being unable to send or receive or do both.

I have found both SweetMail and Musashi will work to send and receive messages. Musashi must be purchased. The major advantage it offers over SweetMail is being able to preview message content in a Mailbox without opening a separate window.

SweetMail is free. SweetMail requires Appearance, but I dropped the Appearance Control Panel and Extension from OS 8.1 into my OS 7.6.1 System Folder and had no problems with it (although Appearance slows things down).

I hope this helps.

Yes - although this site strictly refrains from posting applications that require Appearance Manager.

Hi! I've a way to go around the authentication problem that work for me. There's a software called Mail Forward which automatically pick up and deliver mail forward, so I only need one account that do not need an authentication to be able to continue using Claris Emailer. It has 30 days tryout and one can also pay with cash(USD 15) through Kagi Software. It's very easy to install and use. I'm happy with it. www.sspi-software.com/mailfwd_mac.html
