Using the "Search" function of the Forum turns up ~30 references to "gopher". Perhaps you would like to go through the "gopher" info in the forums and create a list of the sites mentioned and provide a list for the group. I think overall there are very few active sites out there. System7Today has its own as does Floodgap. I am not really aware of any other places. I do use the System7Today gopher from time to time. I sort of enjoy downloading the pdf files with cutouts to make models of the older Apple hardware. They look kind of nice sitting on the edges of the book shelf.

wove said it all. Just merely supplying a few links, here we talked about file archives on Gopher. In this thread we posted some more good Gopher URLs. There's about 300 servers out there at the moment, although some single ones (like SDF.org) holds hundreds of projects. There is a lot to be discovered and stuff isn't "jumping at you", you'll have to dig like we dug the WWW in the 90's. I encourage everyone do so and post his/her favorite links in the above thread, maybe we can start a collection of "recommended gopher stuff".

Speaking of, what is you guys' favorite Gopher client? I haven't used it since decades ago, when I was tasked with creating the first web site for a job by "translating" their Gopher site into HTML. I need to use it to download parts that are needed for Classilla...

I quite like TurboGopher on older hardware, otherwise I mostly use Classilla for both Gopher & HTTP content in 8.6 - 9.2.2. in OSX I use TenFourFox with the BuckTooth plugin. On my M1 MacBook Air running Sonoma I tend to use Gophie.

Another vote from me for TurboGopher. I also use MacLynx b5 for Gopher as it's convenient to just use one browser for both http and gopher pages.

Well then, I am obviously absolutely going to use Classilla to download the parts I need to build Classilla!!! I feel a bit derp for not thinking of using a browser...I'd forgotten that most of them used to support gopher! (And a bit pissed off that modern ones don't!)

Now for the other side...serving gopher... My day job is to keep the bits flowing on 120+ (thankfully virtual!) servers for a consortium of University libraries. Imagine my surprise when debugging an outgoing email issue on a machine that serves about 20 academic journals and in /var I saw a "gopher" folder! The server is a LAMP one (Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP), and of course, has never served a gopher page in its life...I've never installed anything related... Do any of you guys know what software is typically/best used to serve gopher? Can apache do it, or is such a thing as a "gopherd" needed? (Yes, I know I am being EXTREMELY lazy and could look this up in a second...but it's more fun talking with you guys, and let me know of your experience...I thought you'd get a kick out of me finding /var/gopher)

You need a gopher server. There's probably an Apache module somewhere to do it, but I've never tried. Both Gophernicus and Motsognir are popular. Another one is Cameron Kaiser's (hi ClassicHasClass!) Bucktooth written in Perl. It's probably the best maintained Gopher server out there. We're running Motsognir on a Debian host for gopher.system7today.com and gopher.macos9lives.com. It's quite straight forward to set up and has PHP support among other things.

PHP embedded in Gopher pages?!? Wow! That's pretty cool! PHP gets a bad rap these days (even by me when I have to debug it) but is actually pretty awesome, when you think about it.

This is very cool, you absolutely have to set up your own Gopher server. Or mirror www stuff of your universities and let us know! :-) Also ful ack on PHP. I don't get why everybody is picking on it, older versions were buggy and limited but especially since PHP 8 much changed for the better ... it's especially fun if people with their bloated JavaScript frameworks start lashing out at PHP ...

It is very nice to see gopher sites making something of a comeback. Gopher is a beautiful fit for System7. There is solid working gopher software for System 7, and almost by design gopher spaces have material that can be used without much effort on System7. The Amish communities still travel about with horse and buggy. Rather that expending spending years trying to breed faster horses to keep up with modern transportationm they have successfully lobbied the local govts to create horse and buggy lanes. Horse transport will simply never fit with modern transportation. The sane thing is to modify the infra structure. In case of the System7 well luck out because the infrastructure is already there. I think we would be better off to exploit the tools we have and know how to use. Over the long haul it seems more would be gained by creating a more diverse collection of gopher sites than somehow chase a more more modern browser.
