The unarchiver found here <https://theunarchiver.com> (newer browser required) supports early versions of Mac OS X. Maker sure you click to download the older version as the newest version only supports 10.9 and up. It handles most all compression formats. I have been using it since Tiger, so I am not positive it goes all the way back to the beginning of OS X, but I think it does.

Too bad Wove's suggestion didn't work out for you! :( Thanks for the effort, Wove! :D

Unfortunately, at least when I also asked on this question, the answer I was given was that as far as OS 9 down running on earlier Classic Macs could not handle compressing in the 7-Zip compression format, either at all, or the process would be glacial. The format decompression would similarly suffer, I'd imagine. Maybe OS 9 on the early G3's, like my Beige G3, would have a shot at it? But getting someone to put out something so niche would be hard to imagine, especially if it won't perform well enough to be practical, which may be part of the underlying issue.

Did you try this already?

I know this has been discussed before, here's one of those discussions:
http://macintoshgarden.org/forum/request-can-someone-write-a-7z-unzipper-mac-os-8

You could check-in with that poster to see if he found his 7-Zip tool!   :)

Especially in some of my Mac emulation, I've had moments when I feel StuffIt (that's way simpler than 7-Zip) is taking its sweet time, so much so I have to get up, stretch and go do something else. Some instances when I return well over an hour later, it's still going (especially when the files are multi-megs or a gig-plus in size), and mind you, this is just the unstuffing process! :o So I don't even want to imagine how 'slow-to-a-crawl' unzipping a 7-Zip compressed archive would take under similar conditions (my worst conditions were running Mac OS 8 using the droid port of Basilisk II on an ARM-processor under Android version that was nowhere near the latest on my ARM-based Chromebook)

Here's a 'Aha!' comment that drove the nail in this coffin that confirmed my own findings on the issue:

Haha, I know 68040 will have a field day for me pointing out the foibles of running that outdated port of BII, but he posted a solution to that recently that I definitely want to look at, since it might hold the answer to running a PowerPC emulator as well, although just a better version of Basilisk II among other things would certainly suffice! (fingers-crossed) But I keep saying, he's a mad genius with all of his tinkering! (as if you didn't know this already! lol) ;)

Sorry it did not work, from what I read Unarchiver V3.2 works on Panther. Using MacPorts <https://www.macports.org> you can download and install the command line tools to handle a variety of compression formats. Overall MacPorts is an excellent tool to help old Mac OS X systems use newer BSD subsystem components with older versions of OS X. It is also useful to install newer versions of command line tools for older versions of OS X.

The second link in my last post talks about 7z being a container format, so some formatted archives might still fail if unsupported; just a thought depending on what happened on your end?

I made a build targeting OS X 10.2 of The Unarchiver 1.6, but I don't have a Mac running Jaguar at the moment. It works well on Tiger, maybe you can give it a try.

Uploaded it on the Garden (dowload number 7): http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/the-unarchiver

Too bad that didn't work! I installed a OS X 10.2 VM to test the app and I realised I compiled the dependencies (which are just two!) using a more recent SDK, while the application itself was compiled and linked using the Jaguar SDK.

Not really sure how that worked in the first place, but the build I uploaded earlier won't work on OS X lower than 10.3.9 - sorry about that!
I will remove the download option from the page as it won't be really useful for anyone, but I think I might dedicate a couple more hours this weekend to see if there's something we could do with this code. :)
