So a couple of years back I started some research into an epub reader, but the format didn't exist (I believe it was according to Adespoton, software for the Palm had the nearest precursor) until mid-to-late 2000s.

This left figuring out the actual format used in EPUB 2.0, which seems to be the defacto XHTML 1.1 and a limited subset of CSS2, along with NCX for the ToC and XML, all used with an additional option for embedded OpenType fonts (which begs whether TrueType fonts are also allowed, since TT is also part of the Classic Mac OSes, at least as from System 7.0) as well as GIF, JPEG, PNG and SVG images. Lastly, what's really wild about EPUBs is their added flexibility to embed multimedia like audio and video files as well!

So since several of these standards are too new for the Classic Mac OS, I am now looking at the possibility of simply converting the new web-based standards to older and more compatible ones, this way simplifying viewing  and possibly the playback of EPUBs on our old Macs, most likely on good old web browsers.

So, here's what it took to get both a webpage and Word doc that literally reads like the epub:

1. (annoyingly) a modern online epub to Word 'doc' converter
2. open it in Word 2001
3. save it as a webpage

The resulting page kept all of the epub's punctuation marks and font styles intact and even included the epub's front cover image in both   Word and the web browser! brilliant! :D

It opened well enough in iCab (and I'm sure most other browsers) but best in Classila of course, the most modern one

For some odd reason it lost its cover in Word '98, but even Word 5 opened it fine when I saved it in that format in Word 2001, minus the cover image.

Another odd quirk, this one relating to SheepShaver and MS Word, I had opened Word 5.1 first, then Word '98 and finally Word 2001. When I went to close Word 2001 (all files closed out) the emulator didn't buckle, then I did the same with Word '98 and no issues. In fact I still have the same booted SheepShaver Mac running as if opening and closing those two versions had zero issues with the emulator, something I'd never accomplished with either version before! :o maybe the trick is to leave Word 5.1 open, then open the rest? not sure what the magic sauce for this was but I'm documenting it if it turns out to be a crazy workaround to a more stable Word '98 and 2001! :) note that on both I did turn off their little assistants after installing them for added stability.
