Last night I started building my music library on my 7200/75 by ripping Badmotorfinger by Soundgarden. I used Audion, but I had to edit each song one by one. Then I reached the limit of the number of songs I could rip without having to purchase it. I know there's a s/n for it, but I couldn't find where to put it in.

Anyway, I'm sure there's a better app anyway. What do you guys use for not only ripping CDs, but also setting their title, artist, album info?

Apps I've found that either encode MP3s or let you edit the meta/ID3 tags, and which task they can do, or both encode and edit:

List of MP3 encoding/info editing apps
Audion - both, but it only lets you encode 20 for free before making you buy it, and you have to edit the ID3 tags manually
AudioCatalyst - both. It can also query a CDDB server and populate the ID3 tags automatically.

Audion, SoundJam MP, iTunes could all do the ripping and auto ID3 tags back in the day when they could connect to their default metadata provider. This gives me an idea of a new and fun project :D

I use iTunes on OS X to rip CDs.  I’ve not done so in maybe 6 months or so, but I think some versions can still query the CD database to get track names, album info etc. I’ll give this a try again tonight and post here.

I eagerly await what you have in mind Knezzen hehehe ;)

@mac-cellar I was really hoping to use something on classic Mac OS. I just installed iTunes 1.1 on 8.6 last night with this patch enabling it to install on Mac OS 8.6, but it crashes when I try to run it with error type 3.

So far the only app that has let me both encode and edit the info has been Audion, but it quit encoding after the first 20 encodes. It won't even let me edit the mp3 info now. I'm still looking. When I find some more I like, I'll share ;)

Edit: I'll update my original post with the apps I find that I like.

@ShinobiKenobi: I use Audion as my favorite audio app in classic PPC Mac

Register it by clicking "Purchase" in Audion's menu, then select "Enter Serial Number" and paste in the serial code into the pop-up window. HTH.

@MTT I did that shortly after installing it, but it still told me I hit my limit of 20 free rips, and it won't even let me edit the tags.

@ShinobiKenobi: That sounds like to me, that you may be using a "trial" code, and not a proper full code. Or maybe didn't click OK after pasting in your code? The free 20 mp3 encodings is what you get without a code being entered.

With Mac OS 8.6 you should probably install Audion 3.0.2a for classic. It was the final released version –for Mac OS 8.6 - 9.2.2, and it was given away for free by Panic.

It's DL #5 on the Audion 3 page, file name: Audion3.0.2.sit_.bin (7.80 MB)

The code is  RNL07P0-030HWMV-4MAGDS3-4U17REX  which will fully enable it. The code and link to the original give-away page now at the Internet Archive, is also listed in the description area of the Audion 3 page.

Congrats on your 777th post. It astounds me how the forum has really jumped back to life. System 7 was a productive system for many many years slowly fading into obscurity and falling quiet. It is pleasing to see it still generating so much interest.

I am so old that CDs still seem new fangled to me and I never bought any mostly because I never had a CD player except the one built into the computer and overall a computer is a piss poor way to listen to music. The computer is OK for creating background noise like the radio though. Most of what I have for ripped music was done by my kids and in honesty I am content that whatever it might be remains anonymous.

You recorded mixed tapes, too Wove? :D

And I know, right? We were all there back when Dan would have those funny rants.. only Dan! lol ;)

I'm glad Knezzen and Bolkonskij revived S7T and took the baton in this Mac-relay race and then went to the next level with all of their behind-the-scenes know-how.. thanks a mill guys!!! :)

@ShinobiKenobi: iTunes 2 on OS 9 can still query CDDB (or whatever it is called these days) and pull track names, metadata, etc.  I just tested this with a fresh iTunes 2 install and a CD I just bought.  Full disclosure: I'm using the patched Nubango-compatible iTunes 2 that is available on Macintosh Garden, though I'm not sure that matters with this issue.

I had iTunes 1.1.2 running on OS 8.6 a year or two ago, and I know I was able to do the same.

There once was a way to hack SoundJam into getting track names from FreeDB, but I think FreeDB has been gone now for a few years.

Have fun putting together your library whatever works for you... and from one Soundgarden fan to another - excellent choice for a first rip :)

FreeDB has morphed into "Gnudb.org"
Quote
"Gnudb.org a new home for the freedb.org database to make sure it stays free."
Note: Although the link above is HTTP and works as is, all of the internal links on the Gnudb.org site are hard coded HTTPS links, requiring a modern browser.

@mac-cellar that's cool. I had to put my iMac G3 and beige Macs away unfortunately, cuz I just don't have room for them right now. So I'm back on Mac OS 9.2.2 on my Quicksilver, on which I have iTunes.

Thanks, yeah, that's my favorite album of theirs. I don't have a blu-ray drive on my Quicksilver in order to easily copy my music, so I have to rip CDs.

@cballero Congrats! that's a lot of messages.

I started listening to cassettes again last year after I found a cheap Yamaha K-2000, a top-of-the-line tape deck from 1982, which retailed brand new for about $800 USD. I had to fix it, though, cuz the clutch assembly wheel's felt was old, so it only went one way. It has other minor problems, but it sounds great :D

Whoa! early 80s model, sweet! :D

That's the main issue with mechanical things :( but thankfully one can just pop the tape out and flip it for a quick one-way-only workaround to rewinding without a working backward button :)
