I'm just wondering if anyone knows of one such utility that will split a bigger file (e.g. 3 MB) into fitting 1.3 MB parts that one could copy onto 3 floppy disks and rejoin later? I did a brief search online but didn't come up with anything. But I'm pretty certain there must have been such solutions. Any ideas? |

StuffIt Deluxe or StuffIt Lite - any version that can run on 6 or 7+ Simple to use, choose 800k or 1.4MB sizes or any size you want. Make a .sit archive, even .sea if you wish, then choose to segment it and a size, insert floppy when requested. Other compression apps can do this, I prefer StuffIt here as the date and time stamps will be preserved.

C'mon people, that's an ez one: Joe Porkka's Split & Join does the trick just fine. Sebastian, you of all people should have known this one.

Indeed, I haven't had this problem before since I hadn't tried to move bigger stuff via "sneaker net". The usual split & concat stuff I'm preoccupied with today is usually some unix action in OSX when joining segmented Mac Garden uploads back together. Not on System 7. Besides, this thread might be helpful for others running into the same problem. Thanks to both of you for the rapid response. :-)

Well, on my host I run Massimo Melina's HFS Server, a very simple http file server: (modern link) https://www.rejetto.com/hfs With a little bit of set-up, you can do LAN downloads and uploads, so with two Macs, you can upload from a more modern Mac to your host and then download to an older Mac from the same host (just make sure you're sending cross-platform friendly archives or documents that won't lose their identity, like Mac programs or System files!) The sole requirement is Windows 95 and up or any Linux using Wine, but Macs should also have something similar, right? (I've been looking into Wine for Mac OS X for a couple of little programs* I like like this one) The real trick HFS offers me is its upload feature; all 68k Mac browsers I tried worked with it (mainly iCab and Classila)I never have to stop to create a floppy anymore as long as the Macs have a working LAN port or Orinoco WiFi card (that's less secure) *other neat little apps I like to use include an old-school mid-nineties Win app I begged Nick Bradbury to consider porting to Mac, his freeware program, HomeSite 1.2: http://web.archive.org/web/19961219224534id_/http://www.dexnet.com/ v2.0 Screenshot: http://web.archive.org/web/19970123201818id_/http://www.dexnet.com/homesite/scr/hs_fullscreen.gif Nick had a cartoon strip, enjoy! http://web.archive.org/web/19970123201500id_/http://www.dexnet.com/dexter.html Modern links: folks praising nick's app: https://nick.typepad.com/blog/2009/06/homesite-discontinued.html a current and hopefully safe? app link: https://homesite.neocities.org/ and finally, a little about the man behind the app: https://nickbradbury.com

SplitIt! (shareware) is another option. You can specify the precise size of chunks desired. I was also going to suggest Apple Backup (bundled with 7.5 Performas) but on a quick check it looks like it insists including your system folder in the copy to floppies!

Quote from: Bolkonskij: "The usual split & concat stuff I'm preoccupied with today is usually some unix action in OSX"For the usual split & concat stuff on System 7+, you can use ChunkJoiner to join those part-files created by Split&Concat and other programs which use the *nix Split format. ChunkJoiner limitations: Files to join must be less than 2GB total. ChunkJoiner only concats part files, it does not split files.

I think we all can agree that the Garden has plenty of tools for Split&Join operations for 68k. Unless there is some specific requirement - like handling files 2GB+ (which shouldn't be a concern on v7 systems) - pretty much any of 'em will do.

Great, thanks for the suggestions folks. Now I only need to get around and test them all to find out which one does it the most reliable / fastest :-)
