Hey everybody, as I'm fiddling with my IIci, I want to get out the four SIMM RAM modules from its memory bank A. However, this proves harder than I thought. These oldies don't have the "wedges" on the side that you just pull down to eject them. The old SIMMs are held in place by plastic hooks to the left and right of the module (hence what the holes on the side of the modules are for) I know there used to be a "SIMM Removal tool", as Apple suggests using in their service manual. I could probably use just two spudges / flathead screwdrivers but then we're talking brittle 30 year old plastic and the risk of slipping and unwantingly damaging the board / module. Any suggestions / advice from those of you running on old hardware? |

I would always just reach down with my fingers, and pull the plastic latch back on one side. Then grab that edge of the SIMM with the fingers of my other hand and pull it up. The side with the latch still in place would simply let go and the SIMM would just sort of rotate out. Of course you do not want to pull the latch back until it breaks, but if you are gently pulling the latch back at the same time you are pulling that edge of the SIMM up, the SIMM will typically just pop free.

Exactly as Wove described  I remember that RAM is usually seated quite sturdily, so there is an art of using your thumb and finger to 'rock' it out; which is just pulling very gradually on either side 'till it goes up a little, and little-by-little, the SIMM comes out. The usual warnings go beforehand: ideally, wear an antistatic strap on the hand touching the SIMM card; make sure the surface and the ground you're on are not carpeted, like sitting on a sofa with socks on the carpet (not that that would be an easy place to be doing such an operation, but for others that may have stumbled in looking for an easy, quick-and-dirty tutorial, lol!  ) basically don't be wearing or touching surfaces that create, store and/or build-up any static on yourself since it will zap your electronics gone!

Thanks guys. I have short fingernails, but you need some to get between the SIMM module and the sturdy hooks. After unsuccessful attempts to "push" the hooks out by using a tool, I decided to use two very small flathead screwdrivers, carefully inserting them between the hook and the module and gently pushing them. The modules eventually came free.

Good to hear you were successful. Was this for an upgrade, or just part of routine maintenance? Being a tradesman working in a shop, my common approach to delicate work is to ask, "Does anyone have a bigger hammer!"

@cballero: Well if you do sing it, make sure you record it in a format playable on a IIci. It would be good if you could post it, so we can stream it on a IIci as well. I am waiting with eager anticipation.

Which is why I removed the old SIMMs in there. Can't blame them after 30 years of service! Had my kids playing games on the IIci all day and it ran stable, no more death chimes or sudden full freezes.

Ah, the joys of real hardware malfunctions But I'm happy you got to the bottom of your issue; the IIci is one of my favorite Classic Macs, and the very first Mac (well, along with the IIfx, lol) that I actually wanted to buy when it was still on the market And as far as the songs, I can't promise it, but stay tuned..
