The other night we had an unusual mains electric interruption. Didn't lose power completely, but it was severely reduced. Some lights went out (LED), others glowed dimly, radio started crackling, router stayed on, but fridge freezer went off. Neighbour had same issue, but further up the road they had no problem. So what's this got to do with Macs? Well at the time I had a 7100 and G4 MDD running, and it was interesting how they behaved. The HD on the 7100 started clunking, then the Mac turned off and made the car crash sound. Then it tried to restart again and again. Bing bing bing! Had to pull the plug! Meanwhile the G4 seemed oblivious to what was happening. I didn't want to tempt fate, so quickly saved my spreadsheet and shut down. Interestingly both my monitors carried on working (one CRT, one LCD). Both machines started up fine today so no harm done. |

@ovalking I might think that the power interruption behavior variables between machines/devices is a difference in electronics design, PSU tolerance & fault recovery. So anyways, since I moved to the gulf coast, I live 2 miles from the main electric producing power plant, about once every month the power will bounce so fast that my various electrons in the house may or may not freak out. Two Intel Mac Minis shut/stay down every time pronto, it has no effect a G4 Mac mini or my Quadra 605, a Dell Win7 machine will reboot (told to) and a 150MHz Pentium DOS machine goes into a fit, 2 WiFi rage extenders flip out and have to be reset but don’t actually lose power, it effects NO monitors, and the main router stays on with no loss of internet. When I lived in snow country, power would drop, but for no less than, say, 3 seconds. Everything’s just going down and then it’s each to his own to resurrect itself. No recovery of course. I always say a prayer and assess the “time factor to recovery”. I worry about some of these old machines, including appliances, not waking up. Good thinking on the spreadsheet save and shut down on the G4. You have a radio? Nice!
