The guy creates images from freely available Mac apps and games and sells them for money? At least they're honest about it: Quote Dear friends, Never heard of him though. Appears to be located in Saint Petersburg, Russia ? You may have trouble getting your stuff delivered by post due to sanctions.

From what I saw they are located in St. Petersburg, Russia and they want to be paid in USD. That sort of raises my eyebrows. I do wonder about the legitimacy of some of the items. They have an Amiga OS 3.9 image for sale, for roughly the same price as Amiga OS 3.9 sells for from other retailers. I guess I would avoid the source, although in honesty I have no concrete reason to do so.

But they offer hardware, too.

wove, the Dollar is not banned and still convertible in Russia as far as I know. I wouldn't hold that against them. @68040 what hardware are you after? I know someone in "Piter" (St. Petersburg) who might meet and pick up the stuff in person to then pass it on. Just to make sure there's a real exchange of money / goods.

Typically with a PalPal transaction for foreign purchases, you send PayPal USD and PayPal does the conversion to the local currency and pays the seller in their local currency. Just the fact that this seller wants payment in USD instead of Rubles makes me think of this as a black market transaction. The deal seems akin to buying opiates in baggies from a fellow in an alley.

@Bolkonskij - nothing particular yet. It just struck me that they offer such a huge arsenal of HW add-ons and that makes their software offerings look a bit more "legit" in turn - at least in my eyes. @wove - Sorry to say, but I think your view is a bit tainted by reading too many Russia scares. The US $ is - whether we like it or not - the lead currency for international trade. And since close to 99.9% of the merchandise those folks offer is made overseas, its perfectly reasonable to assume that these guys have to pay for their wares in US currency, too. And its not just the losses they'd suffer if converting their money back and forth between $ and Rubel all the time. Ever since America and the EU decided to abuse the SWIFT system as a weapon in their fight for global dominance, it has become more and more difficult to convert Rubel into US$. Because now every financial institution doing business with Russian state organizations (like their national bank) risks sanctions or worse. So its best to bypass all that hassle by holding on to your Dollar reserves in a separate PayPal wallet. Which by the way, is PP's default setup if you deal in multiple currencies.

Ah well, before this escalates into a political discussion I'd kindly ask everybody to leave out politics, it's no good discussing it on System 7 Today :-) I assume the store imports the hardware right from the same Chinese manufacturers that stores in Europe and the U.S. also do. So nothing odd about that. I think you can find about the same items in about the same price range in European or U.S. stores. Since the delivery date and reliability is a big question mark if you're residing in North America or Europe, I'd personally refrain from ordering. But, of course, that is your decision to make.

Sorry for the Politico, but how to avoid that when talking about Russia or China or ... pretty much anything outside of "us" these days? I miss them times when you could look innocently at a parcel shipped from overseas and all you did was marvel at the colorful stamps and the fancy writing it came covered in. I read about the catalog of some California oddities dealer that many here and on the Garden consider their "Web before the Web". Well, for me it were the brochures and handbooks of electronic parts makers from China to Ceylon that served the same purpose. I could never muster the energy to actually fill out a form, get me a bank certified check and mail that to some merchant thousands of miles away. But I could have if I wanted to and that thought alone kept me browsing those pages until late in the night. For me its a sad development that this freedom is now vanishing, too. But let's not talk about it here. In any case, that was the true motivation that got me fascinated with that website.

Their items were once available on eBay, but a quick search didn't yield any of their items. They seem to offer more items on their site now. I'm not certain if they had any good feedback back then though.

From what I heard they made it quite difficult for sellers from Russia to sell their stuff on ebay. I don't know any details, this is just "hear-say", so I can't vouch for it, just passing it on. Like I said, I guess the best option is simply to buy from stores here if you like safety or otherwise order directly from China!

@Bolkonskij - Ah, yeah but then you gotta go through bulk purchase sites like Ali-Baba. I doubt there are many single item order sites for vintage Mac items located near the Yellow river. And one more thing: From my OS/2 days I fondly remember the software avalanche bestowed upon us by Russian coders. They wrote good stuff for little money, long after all Western outfits had dropped the platform. So yeah, I tend to be a bit biased in favor of Ivan & Co.
