I thought it'd be nice to have a sticky thread where we gather all the info regarding resources for creating our own Hypercard stacks. There's a lot of tips floating around, both here in the forums and on other places, but it seems hard to find 'em when you need 'em.

If you've got anything to add, please post below :-)

Hypercard 2 in a Hurry (PDF version of book, hosted on vintageapple.org)

Advanced Hypercard tips:

A few sites I've found along the way... some of these are just old collections of stacks, but they might be helpful to dig into.

@Bolkonskij - That page promised me a Zillion sound files. I downloaded and counted them, and fell short. :(
But never mind, thx anyway. I went straight to @mac-cellar's links.

Downloaded the XCMD stacks - all of them - and compiled every bit of info I could squeeze out of the other links into my Notepad Deluxe databases.

Sluuurp and thx, that was tasty. :D

@mac-cellar - Unfortunately the download links on both sites are all dead as a Dodo. :(

@68040 - that's odd.  I just tried them here myself this afternoon.  Both worked on a modern browser.  Haven't tried them with iCab on the Quadra though.

@68040 - nevermind, I see what you are saying about the download links.  Unfortunate.  My apologies.

@mac-cellar & @68040: The FluxSoft ftp download links. I was able to download all of those today. Perhaps the ftp site was offline for maintenance earlier (if that was the site you commented on).

I also went to Jeanne Devoto's web page but didn't try DL'ng anything from that page. I do have a much pawed over copy of her book "HyperCard 2.2 The Book" (co-written with Dan Winkler & Scot Kamins), which I've had since new. An invaluable resource should you come across a copy.

Some useful sources of stackware can be found on compilation CDs of the early 1990's. For example; "Wayzata's Best of Shareware" and "CD Fun House 9.0", and "World of Mac". Altogether holding hundreds of HyperCard educational and games stacks. The latter; "World of Mac" includes a full copy of the much lauded "If Monks had Macs".

HyperCardOnline.com is a simple web form through which anyone can upload HyperCard stacks, new or old, for preservation on Archive.org. They can be uploaded raw, stuffed, or on disk images.

So far this project has collected 3,694 stacks:

https://archive.org/details/hypercardstacks

To browse the uploads by category, use the hidden scrollbar at the right of the sidebar to scroll down to "Subject", click "More...", and apply some filters. Several of the categories will be of interest to stack developers, including hypercard_stack-building-tools (265 items), hypercard_stack-scripting-tools (112), and hypercard_xcmd-xfcn (483).

Here's another one I've run into today:

https://www.dialup.cafe/~hcheaven/

It's unfortunately behind encryption and only a mirror of Hypercard Heaven but not all link targets, so lots of 404s but still, it's there and provides good info on available tools & stuff that helps the attempting Hypercard developer what is out there to help solve his/her problem :-)

Here's a good one for anybody interested in HyperCard development, discovery, evolution, or history. For experts and novices, alike.

In 1989, Macworld magazine held a "SuperStacks" competition, inviting anyone involved in creating HyperCard "Stackware", to enter.
In 1990, Macworld released a Winners Showcase CD, highlighting the winning entries of that competition.

The CD also includes full working copies of early released HyperCard versions: 1.0.1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.2.1, 1.2.2, 1.2.5, and the then new HyperCard 2.0

For more info and download:
The Macworld SuperStacks: Winners Showcase CD-ROM
(at the Mac Garden).

Excellent resource!

I'd really like to create a meaningful Hypercard stack just for the joy of it. But then I'd also like to create the world's last WorldBuilder adventure. Not to talk about porting efforts or finishing up my simulation game written from scratch in C.

Awww... somebody know of a millionaire with too much money who would employ a few of us so we can churn out this stuff? :-D

Bol: I didn't see the mirror to the HyperCard Heaven site on the Archive, so I think I managed to save most of its pages manually:

Archive's cache of the HC Heaven mirror

And as you said, it's a great resource worth preserving! :D
