I came across this photo, taken by a QuickCam back in 1996. It shows the desk of a Mac shareware developer (Christoph Schaffhauser, for who is interested) and it remembered me how my desk used to look. Actually pretty much the same like Christoph's! Except I only ever had one monitor, but it had the same level of chaos and lack of "desk hygiene" :-D I spent days after days at the place, I virtually "lived" there. But looking back now, it looks weird how I could. I mean, today I couldn't stand working in an environment such as the above for more than 5 minutes :-) What about your story? You guys also went from chaos to super clean ? Or once chaotic, always chaotic? Sidenote: Anyone of you still got any actual photos of their 90's Mac desk setups and wants to share them with us? |

Gosh, how the image sizes were small back then and the computers so awfully, awfully big. The desks were huge, but the monitors that had to fit on them were humongous. Our endurance was sheer endless and our backbones were as flexible as rubber bands. And we couldn't wait to get out of bed in the morning to conquer the day. Now the images have grown huge, the monitors became as thin as our desk jobs got precarious and the computers have grown as small as the margin of profit for most of us. Our days of conquest are over and we need every ounce of endurance just to get our brittle bones out of bed in the morning. :O Yet one long look at that picture and I feel like Edmund Hillary on the way to Mount Everest again.

I had a huge corner desk with a keyboard tray as well. Aweful to sit next to and use the computer with, but it was the norm for some reason for "computer work" at home. Need to find a picture somewhere and post

Those desks were something of a passing fad in the 90s, judging by how many of them showed up on the curb marked "free" by 2000. Everyone I ever saw, was ugly and poorly made and I resisted the temptation to jump on board. Much of that is probably due to having to accommodate the very bulky monitors at the time. The keyboard tray might have been nice, as working the keyboard on a table was always uncomfortable. I read in some article way back that part of the reason for the slow uptake of home computers in Asian and South America was attributed to the fact that the cultures found the machine ill suited to being a nice fit into their traditional home. I can certainly see that, in our home the computers always felt out of place and we did our best to contain them in the back of closets and pantries. Technology did kind of fix that. LCD panels flat against the wall and laptops that easily reside on a shelf under the table are much distracting and invasive.

This is why I opted for Powerbooks as soon as I could afford them! ![]() An local online swap meet website that became well-known after a while offered a bunch of Macs people were almost dumping as they bought newer models (I was next to Cupertino at the time) so there was never a moment good deals wouldn't show-up. I remember driving almost an hour to Frisco get my hands on a beaut so well worth it! eBay also sported some good deals. I'd use VNC whenever possible to remote into my desktop Macs for stuff I couldn't be bothered with to do sitting upright; although some things demanded the full desktop experience, especially certain games ![]() Ah.. those were the days!
