The past week has made me experience something I haven't experienced before in my 40 something winters ... severe neck/shoulder pain. Thanks to some exercise and a few heat pads I've mostly overcome it. Still, I don't feel inclined on going back. I've decided to trade my venerable old computer chair for a Varier Balans knee-chair that I've just ordered. Here's a pic on revontulet. I've had briefly used one as a young adult before and actually liked it. Due to the construction, you're basically forced to sit straight on them. Unlike what we tend to do in our office chairs. Although it's not advised to do so for hours on end, but then you can always use it as a normal stool too. What are you guys using with your Mac rigs? Anything special or just regular chairs? |

If you can actually sit and work on that for any prolonged period than you're most certainly more athletic than I an say of myself. I tried one of those many years ago and didn't last more than 5 seconds on it. :O Since I life mostly out of my suitcase I haven't had the luxury of a real office chair - or even a desk for that matter - in most of the places I use(d) to call "home" for decades on end. For some reason even land lords of high prized "serviced apartments" deem any kind of office equipment to be outright offensive in a place meant for leisure and relaxation. So as a consequence I have to make due with lowly cocktail tables and unruly TV chairs for "home office work". And a stiff neck is the least of my worries, as my aching back keeps reminding me how precarious this kind of "posturing" can be to your health.

I looked at that chair and I would have to see that in use, because I cannot even figure out how it works. @68040's comment about posturing and health is very true. My work always kept me on my feet and moving about, which seem too hard and I envied those who had the cushy office jobs. But as I have gotten old, I notice that those of us who were up and moving about for work are still up and moving about. I know many who had those envied office jobs are now having much more trouble getting around.

68040, c'mon, it's not THAT bad. It depends on your stature, of course, but generally these chairs are surprisingly comfortable. If you're not used to it or have weak back muscles, you're probably not going to last long in the beginning. But it'll gradually get better. Getting up in between is helpful. And that is what we IT folks should always do every 30-40 mins anyway. I found a picture of the positions (retro compatible). Despite being called "knee-chair" it appears the pressure is mostly applied onto the shinbones. Excessive use isn't probably very good for the knee / shinbones either. @wove - very true! I might add that I find that very same difference also being visible between rural and urban people. Down the road from us lives an older gentleman, a German hailing from Romania who repatriated during the 1990's. He's 84 years old now. Literally EVERY single morning I see him in his blue collar heading out of his house with a cup of coffee and into the little workshop-shack he had built for himself in his garden. At times he uses his bike to go to nearby woods to grab some dead wood. He was born and raised in a village in the Carpathians. You can tell! He doesn't know different. There's always work in need of being done if you live rural. They pick it up with their mother's milk, as we tend to say. So despite his high age, he gets up and out to work every single morning. Tell that any urban folks who "need" to sleep in until 9 am and can't screw in a light bulb themselves but are oh-so-indispensable ...

@Bolkonskij My perfect office chair is situated somewhere between this and that version of back comfort. For me the whole idea of an office chair is that you do not have to lean forward but instead can lean back and relax. Indeed you should see it as your personal playground in which to wiggle and squirm and make all kinds of crazy moves - and spend as few hours as possible of the day in the same position. You might get used to that 1 position seating aid, but I for one could never spend the whole day in one and the same posture. Its yet another reason why I prefer home office these days: No more complaints by the boss that I am lazying around at the desk. Yes, if I have to wait for some time consuming task to complete, I don't accept that I have to do it sitting up straight like a 1st grader in school (do they even sit up like that anymore?). @wove - Reviewing all the abysmal positions in which I was forced to work over the years - both in the office and at home - I can assure you that none of those contributed to my spinal well being. The office chairs were mostly sub-standard., the lighting catastrophic (at best) and the air ... smelly would be the understatement of a lifetime. We office worker bees are the brains of every corporation, specially the IT department. W/o us no company could exist anymore. Yet look at the lousy work place conditions under which they make us slave the day away. When I worked at Volkswagen I was shocked to find out that the air at the manufacturing line was fresher, the floors cleaner and even the coffee tasted better there, than in that dark, cramped IT department where I had to do my kowtows 8-10 hours, 5 times a week.

I use a Humanscale Diffrient World chair -- they cost a small fortune new, but I found a used one for a bargain. Pretty comfy.

A chair for a thousand bucks? :O Those must be made for golden behinds and my rear end - unfortunately - is not that marketable.

I'm using some kind of chair from an old folks home. Steel chassis and 1970's green fabric. Have used it for the past 25 years and I'll probably use it for 25 more if I can

So, my Varier Balans Classic arrived a few days ago after a looong waiting time which had my dealer even phoning in with the company to speed-up the delivery process successfully. Good ol' mom & pop stores which would do something like this for you ... I've been using it happily ever since delivery. It's even better than I had remembered. There's different sitting positions on it. You can raise a leg to put it on the foot, you can put both up, sit like on a chair, sit with your knees bending etc. My oldest daughter even sat cross-legged on it! Since you can't sit in one position for too long, you're unconciously forced to move ... which is a GOOD thing for us humans! Only thing I noticed was that a few muscles went sore after sitting on it a long time for the first day. As their manual says that's a normal thing because these muscles were asleep for a long time ... Downside to it: It wasn't cheap at about 300 euros but then the wife and I tend to cut back on other stuff rather than saving up on health-related issues. If any of you has back issues, I recommend it. No, I'm in no way affiliated with the manufacturer or any dealers :-D

@Bolkonskij - Jeez Louis, what glorious days we live in. "Cutting back on other stuff", so you can afford a chair that doesn't break your back. I on the other hand just break my back by not worrying too much about chairs and stuff.
