Quote from: Bolkonskij:
"Out of interest, in what folder did you find it?"
Yes, it's buried fairly deep inside of that MacHack '93 disc (I've seen worse).

Probably best described by this screenshot -the classic Mac "Find" was my friend there.

I've added a copy of Netnews to the Mac Garden, so no need to grab that MacHack disc from the WA just for 100+Kbs of data, though there is a bunch of other interesting classic stuff on that CD, too.

Now we just need to track down the missing link; NewsWatcher 1.x ;)
-not John Norstads, but Steve Falkenburg's NewsWatcher, which John Norstad took over the development of. You can also read about his connection with this newsreader in that WA autobiography of John's, linked upstream.

Netscape is a web browser. I don't think it supports Usenet? Go with MT-Newswatcher instead. MTT outlined its merits on page 1 of this thread :)

It's supported through the integrated mail client, but it only works in subscribe mode. So you can't browse through usenet, only put in what you want to subscribe to and get those groups in the email client.

@snes1423: Netscape 3.0 reads NNTP news via its Mail/News component.

Have you set up your News settings in "Options > Mail & News Preferences" in the News settings at the bottom of that dialog window?

If so, usually you first need to download the full list of available newsgroups from Eternal September (a one time event) and then select groups that you want to subscribe to.

If you can't do that, then maybe Netscape 3.0 is not suited for use with ES.

As I do not see anywhere in Netscape 3.0 where you can elect to "Always request authentication when connecting" (to ES) in its user settings.

Nor can I see anywhere in the settings where you can set a password to enable accessing ES.

These will be a requirement for reading news from ES.

In the ES User's FAQ under the sub-heading: "I can only see the hierarchy eternal-september". It mentions requiring this "always request authentication" setting for SeaMonkey (a direct descendant of Netscape).

If you are unable to download the full groups list, and authenticate with an ES password, then you may need to try a newer version of Netscape or use a dedicated NNTP Newsreader instead.

It's been a real long time that I used a Usenet tool of any kind to download news feeds in this format! :)

I created and tested out an account and it was a nice throwback to simpler times! :D

@snes1423: It is possible to read news using Netscape 3.0, by using a News Server that doesn't require authentication. In fact I think this would be the only way that you could, with NS 3.0

I've found such a server which allows you to read NNTP News with NS 3.0. -No authentication or password setup required.

In your NS 3.0 "Options > Mail & News Preferences" in the News settings at the bottom of the "Servers" tab, enter: paganini.bofh.team

In "Options > Mail & News Preferences" under "Identity" tab enter the mail and user name you wish to use.

This should be all you need to do. Go to the "Window" menu and choose the News Reader option.

The Paganini server will connect and deliver the newsgroups list, and then you'll need to scroll through and select groups you want to view. The attached screenshot is fairly descriptive of what to expect.

Nice walkthrough, MTT! Despite Netscape derivatives ability to read usenet posts I think that MT-NewsWatcher is the best option.

Check it out, snes1423!

@snes - Too new !? :-D

On another note, Knezzen and me discussed our experience with the subscription feature of MT-Newswatcher yesterday. We both noticed that the lists act as good bookmarks for interesting groups, but there's never any indication of whether or not any new posts are in the subscribed groups.

@MTT or whoever uses / used MT-Newswatcher, is that normal behavior? Or do we do anything wrong?

Not sure if this is what you mean, but you could start playing around with filters.

For example:
Open a group listing in the comp.sys.mac hierarchy.

Then go: Filters (menu) > Create Filter for... > comp.sys.mac.*

The Filters dialog appears (has a bus load of choices), and perhaps choose:

Hilite if Date is less than 1 hour old (or some other age process).
-I have it set to hilite if articles date is less that 1 day old, and the filter saved under * this suits me.

Choose a hilite color (either for text or background or both) and save.

-make several filters that do different tasks (go crazy go color).

You can also get MT-NW to check for new (groups subscribed to) articles by going to "Preferences... > Newsreading options > check for new articles every x minutes".

But the hiliting feature works nicely and is immediate.

Maybe the MT-NW manual could also produce further ideas ;)

Great tip, MTT! Love it. Do you know if it's possible to open up the window with subscribed groups automatically? Right now I have to do it manually and close the "untitled" window.

@Knezzen: Yes, it's not obvious at first, I'd forgotten that. ;)

When you have an "Untitled" window, drag from the full groups list, group names that you wish to read, into this untitled window. While the untitled window is to the fore, save it, giving it a suitable name. For example; Eternal September. Read your chosen group's news posts via this saved window.

Next time you want to run MT-NW; Launch it by opening the icon of your saved groups, and not MT-NW itself. Now you'll get the groups you regularly wish to read and not an empty "Untitled" window.

If you had previously saved a favorite groups list as described above, then all you need to do is double-click its icon instead on MT-NW's, and you'll see your subscribe groups automatically :)

@snes1423: your comment "Too new for me" WRT MT-NewsWatcher.

It's not, the info at the Mac Garden for MT-NW, if that was your source of info, is incorrect. I will update that page today. MT-NW v2.4.4 or earlier is about the same vintage as Netscape 3.0 and can run in a Mac OS 7.1 and newer.

But if you're happy using NS 3.0 for reading news groups then that's fine, just stick with that. I see you've been able to access news posts (and post) using NS 3.0 via the Paganini servers, which is great to see.

SNES meant he is looking to run older software versions; from 1996 specifically, based on another post he made, hence why he's using Netscape 3 :)
