@Bolkonskij: Do you have much in the way of software for your Newton? And how is it working out for you now that you've had it for a few months? |

Funny that you asked! I had actually have it in my hands yesterday. I didn't get to play much with it, even though I really want to. But since it requires a serial port for connecting and transfering files, I have to use the IIci. As regulars here probably noticed, my IIci isn't doing TCP/IP yet. Well, until I can figure out the PPP part when using my WiFi Modem! So there is no convenient way of download any new software. However, that will hopefully change as I get PPP working. And why are asking? Any chance you might join the Newton fun?

No, just curious as to how you were finding it. That, plus I came across a great wad of public domain and shareware Newton software in a single archived file, contains a 150+ apps, utilities and games. So I was wondering if you had much software for the Newton ![]() The collection is in an internal Apple CD distribution, so they should all be fairly well tested and clean, @DL#12 on that page. Additionally there's a lot of Newton software in some of the earlier 1994 CD editions on that page, but the 1995 disc is the most recent offering, and might be more compatible with your 130 model. A good place to start anyway. Plus it includes all of Apple's official Newton software current at the time (may/may not be obsolete for your model). Also has Palm's Graffiti software package (for the Newton).

That you for the suggestion! I bookmarked the link, I'll definitely give it a try! There's "Mac Garden of sorts" for the Newton called UNNA (retro browser compatible) though I have no idea how complete it is. I'll definitely check it out, thanks!

Twenty years ago UNNA was the Macintosh Garden for the Newton. There was a very active email group for Newton users and the community was very active. I have not done anything Newton is a long time. My Newton's gave up the ghost. But anyway UNNA was an essential resource for Newton Users.

You may be surprised to learn that e-mail group is still around, @wove. And it's still active. It's probably the last e-mail group I've subscribed to that is still active. Lots of Newton enthusiasm still. (e.g. 22 messages in February thus far, 46 in January) Looking very much forward into exploring the world of Newton :-)

Gosh, thank you for those UNNA and newtontalk.net links. They are really good resources. I think anyone with a Newton should subscribe to both. Nice http friendly links too. Much appreciated and good to see.

Newton users are fanatics perhaps even more so than System 7 users When I was subscribed to the list Users were fanatic about using their Newtons for eMail and the web. It is not surprising the sites supporting them would remain old web friendly. I loved email on the Newton. Email was viewed simply as a transport agent, messages were text files and opened in the note pod, replies and new messages were composed in the notepad. You could choose to save or fax or email, by just selecting the transport method. I confess that I have always liked Newton eMail handling more than any other email client.BeOS and now Haiku still can do eMail handling this way, though I think most new users of Haiku have switched to a client that handles email like every other system does. Nissus the makers of the excellent multilingual word processor also make an eMail client for Mac that handled email the same way. I do not think it ever gained much traction and I have not looked on Macintosh Garden to see if it is there.

@MTT glad you enjoy them! I like the design, accessibility and info-density of both very much too. But then I think in general that web design minimalism is entirely relevant in 2024. @wove that's interesting, I need to pay attention and try this myself. Isn't it interesting how there's a fixed perception of how certain computing things are done "right" these days? If you do things differently, it's no longer an innovative approach. No, it's plain wrong. And most people won't give you credit for trying. I find that fascinating. The 80's were so much more open for innovation and change. People would try out new stuff and stick to it if they liked it - or move on. But then maybe I'm just fantasizing ...

They look so cool! I never really knew much about them until now, after reading up on them. Now I really want one! LOL ![]() @Bolkonskij I think most people nowadays just think that everything's already been done and invented or improved/innovated already. I admit that I feel like that a little, but I'm still willing to try new things.

I wonder if they work on Palm IIII. I would like email on it, just because lol. My sisters feller worked as a hp printer engineer and had a newton for work. Always thought it was a super cool device.
