I take everything back I said about no other good vintage multimedia managers being out there compared to Extensis' Portfolio.

I've come across Yasushi Tanaka's PhotoNick and it nipps all my needs in the butt for batch processing of huge amounts of images. Plus it can catalog them (but I am still gonna stick with Portfolio for that).

PhotoNick's filters allow for complex operations, such a orbital skewing, but also for simpler tasks such as noise reduction or color changes.

For example, did you know that the moon buggy used for the Apollo space missions was made of pure silver? ;)

This looks interesting. I have to admit, I've never heard of it before. That's the beauty of Mac OS software ... you keep discovering "new" software long after the last commercial releases :D

Do you know if it supports cataloging of Quicktime videos as well?

The reason I still love my iView Multimedia library is because it can hold basically everything in there.

It even supports supports conditional scripting, JPEG export, preview options and and and.

The only downside is that you have to rearrange some files in the install folder, because the thing comes pre-setup for Japanese users. But there is a read me file (in ouchie English) for every item, so its not too hard a task to achieve.

68040: do you feel like making a guide or preconfigure the stuff you just mentioned? We can host it here on S7T :)

Well, as I said, there are readme files for all that stuff. You just need to be very forgiving towards a lonesome Japanese programmer trying his best to write instructions in English - decades before Google translate made that task easier. :D

  • I renamed some of the folders, so they'll make more sense (to me). The program won't mind and the icons stayed the same. So you can check for yourself.
  • Basically all folders whose names come up gibberish on Western character sets were meant for Japanese users only. The developer was nifty enough to leave the resources unlinked to the app code in "Appearance.rsrc"
  • This way if you exchange the default Japanese version with the English file of the same name stored in one of the sub-folders (just move it up to the main folder) all your menu troubles will go away. ;)
But the readme says its customized for 8.1, so I'm not sure what it'll do on 7.x
  • There is also a separate folder for filter files with proper English menu names in that same sub-Dir. Just replace the one in the main app folder with this one and the last reminders of Nippon in the menu tree be gone (forgive me Amaterasu)
  • You may alter your fav color scheme via one of the color extender resource items (-> extend.rsrc). Or let it be. Since I'm all piped up anyway I had no use for those.
  • The folder I renamed "Sample Actions" contains samples for script automation of image and video processing with PhotoNick.
  • The folder "Files" (original name) contains sound and text files. Seems Tanaka went for max. customizability and thus left as many resources as possible in editable form.
  • Folder "Parameter" (org. name) is also used for scripting and at least this name ought to be self-explanatory.
  • Last not least comes "Exports" - your guess be as good as mine what's that used for. ;)
Seriously, its where file exports are dumped by default.

Interesting!

I've came across a patch for PhotoNick 1.9.9 that patches the Japanese contents to English. Is that something you'd be interested in? Quick look on the Garden didn't reveal the patch on there, but then it might have been integrated into some download?

I've patched mine manually already. But hey, I am all for automation.;)

Want to give this one a try? It supposedly should patch all the menus and stuff from Japanese into English.
