Hello all, finally got around to joining S7T! Briefly, I have an Apple IIc, an LCIII that I recently upgraded with a Quadra 605 MB (includes SCSI2SD, 128MB Ram, swapped the LC CPU with a full 040, Ethernet Card, recapped AppleCD SC + lots of other goodies), 3 PPC Mac Minis, 3 Intel Mac Minis, LOTS of Amigas, Win machines, and an awesome Asus 150Mhz Pentium machine (I built in the 90’s - still gets used every day). They’re all networked except the Iic. They all work perfectly but I’m always tinkering with upgrades for them. I’m currently deep into the Quadra 605 w/System 7.5.5. Looking forward to some MAC fun!

Indeed a beautiful setup, Welcome to System 7. I am very jealous that someone can have such a nice clean organized desk, perhaps you can share your secrets for keeping a desk so simple and well organized. :)

Welcome Johnny7!

I'd say you fit right into our nice little community. Very nice setup on that photo, indeed. Almost like from a brochure :-)

Given the many systems, how do you find the time to "play around" with all of them? :-)

Thanks for the welcome! I stumbled across this particular system from an eBay seller called macman1948 back in 2017 for $199.00. It is basically a brand new computer in the original box the way it would have come from the factory. The seller said his Mom used it a few times and that was it. The seller even tossed in an uninstalled FPU.

As far as the desk goes, it's not really a desk but a table in my office for papers, taxes, bills, etc. I just moved everything over to the left to set the computer up. The other computers are out in the garage where I have a 15' workbench. Still not really enough room to set up multiple systems. I usually get out one computer, work on it for some time, then get a different one out, etc.  This MAC is too nice to leave out there in the attached garage on the bench... plus the temps here have been around 98°f for about 3 weeks with no end in sight of a cool down.

Yeah, having all these vintage computers can be a challenge to tinker with. I tend to buy some new hardware goodies then they sit in the box for far too long. I say to myself "I'll get to that stuff later"... LOL

This 68k MAC has only been out of the box about three times since I've had it. Each time working on a new goal. The only experience I had with Mac OS was OSX Tiger and above. The learning curve going from OS 7.1 to 7.5.5 was steep to understand how to light up a Farallon ethernet card. Of course the secret was Open Transport. Now I feel invincible! HAHA.

So, this go around, my goals have been, print to an IP enabled Postscript printer, use a CD/RW for transferring files, backups, CD Games & network file sharing.

Sorry so long...
Again, thanks for the Welcome!

Recent arrival... came new shrinkwrapped!

Boy, am I glad I bought this a few years ago!

My admiration for getting into the retro Mac hobby coming *NOT* from decades of Mac OS usage (and love) like most of us do. I imagine there's quite a few bumps in the road even though Mac OS always was a well-polished and approachable OS. But how do they say? "Easy to use, hard to master" :-)

I think most of us with original machines can relate to the need-more-space issue. I used to have a dedicated office room, albeit small, but I could house 4 machines in it. Now that room became child no. 1's own room and I'm down to a self-built corner desk that realistically can house two desktop computers without feeling crammed (I really like my stuff orderly). That means tough choices in terms of what computers to put there :-) ..for now, my IIci and the Mac Mini G4 have won. My PowerMac 8600 and PowerMac MDD are in storage, waiting to be drawn out again :-)

Don't worry about writing too much. Most of us here are "old-style" users and don't feel intimidated by having to read more than two sentences. This is not a (anti)social media outlet, after all :-)

Nice finds btw! You should do the right thing and open the Word & Excel box :D I know, all collectors will hate us for that but there's nothing like the feeling of opening up one of those boxes, have the manuals sliding out into your hand, the registration card ... totally nostalgic! Btw, is that Word 4? 5? 6?

Also very nice to see an original boxed System 7.5 copy, especally in what seems to be a pristine condition? Getting them seems to get harder and harder.

@Bolkonskij

Oh yeah! Opening and installing the Word/Excel software was a MUST! I'm not really a collector but I do love getting brand new, old stock, software. That "new software package" smell is awesome. I set up an eBay search for the MAC specific SW package about 4 years ago and finally one came up in 2022. I can be persistent. The versions are Word V5.1 and Excel V4.0. I think there are some update patches for each but I'll have to go search for those again. I always tend to buy essential OS and application SW for all my computer platforms as way too many times the SW on the internet is either corrupt, modified or incomplete.  Plus I can backup the real disks. So, here's a few pics...

I've not seen Word & Excel packaged together like that before. I've got Office 3 (which is Excel 4.0, Word 5.1a & Powerpoint 3.0), and you could get the main components individually too.

I use Excel 4 most days, and like it a lot. Don't use the others much, but they seem ok... unlike later versions....

@Johnny7 - I am using clasic Word & Excel on a regular basis and for my own business.
http://revontulet.org/2023/08/19/cd37dfb5339549938280da07d5f7cbc5.jpg

But in my experience Word 6 plays nice only if it has the system all to own. which isn't realy helpful when working with large projects.

Ah yes, and welcome to S7T.

Hi there Johnny7 - welcome!  Have a gaggle of Mac Minis still hanging around the house myself.  One of which (a trusty G4) was my file & music server until a few months ago.

This is a great community - enjoy!

@68040

That’s great to see someone still using the older versions of Word and Excel on a daily basis! Those versions were always more than capable for any SOHO use! That is one beautiful screen shot!

Does anyone remember when Microsoft would advertise “Working Models” of their Office software in magazines such as PC Mag, PC World, etc back in the early 90’s? They were fully functional except you couldn’t print. I think I used to just copy the doc into word pad to print. Anyhoo, I used those for a few years. IIRC, I had a problem installing those on Win95. So, one day I called MS and told a guy I was having a problem. He asked me what version of Word and Excel I was using and I told him I was using the working models. He just kinda chuckled and then told me he was going to send me the full Word package that I could use to upgrade to V2.0c - for FREE!

I used version 2.0c up to WinXP until I got Office 2003 (which was always my favorite version of Office).

The MS guy also sent me the full Excel V2.1 to replace the working model which I then used to upgrade to Excel V4.0 for FREE but It didn’t come in a retail box. Just the disks and an upgrade card.

Somewhere I have a butt load of 5.25” disks that match all this SW. Also, a bunch of Power Point disks and manuals too - which I can’t seem to locate ATT.

Back when MS was a nice bunch of folks - I didn’t pay a dime for any of this stuff.

Now, I don’t use these old Windows versions anymore for productivity but I will definitely use these new MAC versions on my Quadra!

Okay, just rambling, bragging & getting old… :-)

@mac-cellar

Thanks for the welcome! Gotta say, I don’t think any of my G4 Mac minis will become obsolete. And since the fork of TenFourFox, InterWebPPC (release 4) came out It’s a breeze to surf the web again on OSX 10.5.8.
