So we have this wonderful piece of software (retro compatible link) for Mac OS called iView Multimedia. It's an image cataloger for handling, well, a large number of images, movies, sounds - whatever. I'm thinking of migrating all my family photos to it on the 8600 just for the fun of it. I had been using it like 20+ years ago briefly, before I decided to migrate the (then) small sized collection over to OSX iPhoto. Big mistake. As you may know they discontinued iPhoto later and replaced it with Photos which I really dislike. But back to topic - does anyone of you use iView Multimedia regularly for keeping track of their photos / images / icons ? What's your experience with it? |

I used iView for years and found it absolutely wonderful. I believe that it ended up being purchased by MicroSoft, and I have no idea what became of it after that. It did everything I had ever thought of doing with photo management and it took me a long time to become accustomed to the different workflow with iPhoto and Photos. While I did finally become comfortable with iPhoto I am very sure I could quickly go back to using iView. I liked that iView included file management features, allowing you to maintain a file structure for keeping track of pictures using finder, while not losing the nice database features for the meta data that was provided by iView. The biggest thing I enjoy with the current Photos app is that it keeps the original, while allowing you to make multiple and different edits to a photo, without needing to be concerned about saving original.

This software looks like a lot of fun! ![]() In fact, I have used a similar thumb-nailing multimedia software that also runs on 68k Macs but the one I use did have some limitations when it came to working with 68k video files. I owe you guys its name only because I had it as part of my Basilisk II-ready hd image, but I'll post it once I locate and boot it up

Looks really good. I have a vague memory of trying this back in the day, but I can't remember when and why I didn't keep using it. I as well migrated to iPhoto which was an awesome piece of software when it was released. I have looked for something similar for "Classic". Will surely give this a go!

iPhoto arrived about the time digital photography was really taking off. What Apple really got right was anticipating the user would end up with thousands and thousands of photos. I am guessing at the time I moved from IView Multimedia to iPhoto I had perhaps 250 photos and now I have do have a few thousand. I have no idea how well iView Multimedia could handle a typical photo library of today. I would say that the size of my photo library today, exceeds the storage capacity of any Classic Mac I ever owned. My Mother maintained an album of her life and out family. Snapshots of important events carefully curated into a nice album that set on the shelf under the coffee table. I would guess it has perhaps 150 pictures. My. sister commenting about it noted, "Hell, now we take that many pictures at a birthday party."

Indeed! But unlike mom's carefully assembled photo album, we never tend to watch them thousand photos. At least that's our family I feel.
