Every time I start session I've got half a dozen apps and documents to open. Clicking on all of them by hand is a royal pain in the rear. But here comes Alias Mulitplier to the rescue and I can report: It works as advertised!

Now all it takes is one click and I can sip on my hot cup o'joe while I watch my Desktop getting populated. :)

That sounds really nice, 68040! :)

I'd be wary of launching a bunch of stuff all at once, but I suppose with the right rig that wouldn't be much of anything ;)

For me its the only way to go: Just one click and you are there!

Btw: I just sat up a whole bunch of knowledge databases with Notepad Deluxe.
Got one for 4DOS, one for MacOS, for my book writing stuff and, and, and.

Its so sad that most people use all that vintage power just to play some ancient games. So many developers spend countless hours compiling really nifty software - and yet most of it will never be used again.

But not on my rig!

You do bring up a big frustration with using older systems. I am very often dismayed at how much discussion in retro computing involves games. Frankly I get dismayed at how much discussion on new OSes involves games. Seems the every new Linux distro release first and foremost talks about how well it does Steam.

Of all the retro OSes I have looked at, only RISC OS seems to have been focused on productive uses. RISC OS remains in development, and from what I follow on it, most new developemnt is geared toward productive applications.

Well, I strongly suspect this narrow minded focus on gaming is closely related to the mainstream's artificial excitement over the never ending inflation of GoT look-alikes and other drama soaps on Amazon, Netflix & Co.

Whoever still had any doubt regarding the lack of control we possess over our lives was cured of that disbelieve during the Corona lockdowns. With those "prison sentences" hundreds of millions switched to online streaming services and into a "consume" mode from which they never recovered.

Entertainment is King and like in the days of imperial Rome - after they had discarded the work ethics of the ancient Republic - all that matters now is "bread & games".

The bread we buy on borrowed money - like so many other things we think we own - and the games are provided to us in abundance - yet.

Being truly creative requires thought and to think creatively demands a lot(!) of hard work.

That's a nifty little utility, thanks for sharing! Probably not that useful if you just want to launch a certain set of tool every time you start up your Mac. I'd still prefer using the Startup Items folder for that. But I could imagine using it for a different set of "tool belts" for different jobs during a session. Like one for graphics - one Alias, one click and it'll start up Photoshop, an image browser and a to-do list. Or an author's tool belt - have it launch your word processor, spelling checker and outliner at once.

As for the games. Weren't there statistics already back in the 90's stating that while people openly admitted to buying a computer for education & work, the actual no.1 reason was to play games? I think I had read some.

I guess that's just what a lot of people do and did and hence why there is so much focus on it. Unfortunately. We'd probably have a lot more regulars on here if we'd rebrand to System7Games Today :D (no, no worries!)

Unfortunately this requires 7.6.1 and will not work with 7.5.5
And on my OS8.1 it keeps quitting when you hit the Add button. It did work ok in 8.6 though.

On the plus side, it is now free according to the author's website (Classilla required)
http://www.ziksw.com/support/legacy/

I used it to create a 'launch file' which opens Excel and a bunch of related spreadsheets I'm always working on. Then put it in the Apple menu for easy access.

It's possible to achieve the same result with an Applescript, but this tool is potentially much easier and quicker.
Using the Startup Items folder is also an alternative, but you might not want those items *every* time, or at the beginning of your session.

@ovalking - I run this on MacOS 8.1 68k w/o problems. I use it to set up different work scenarios for book writing, graphics work, multimedia etc.

The catch is that I can use it to not just start progs, but also open files & folders with one click. Writing an Apple Script for that every time is a bit overkill in my view.

Yikes. I think we'll stick to talk about using System 7 today :D

Though a handful more regulars with our mindset would be nice to have in the forum. Recommend S7T to your fellow System 7 users, friends :-)

Just found out that AMPL seems to auto-adjust link targets that were moved within the directory tree. Kind of like the "Fix Broken Link" function that some Desktop add-ons a provide.
