I was wondering if any of you use any alternative clock / calendar solutions on System 7?

I'm looking for something to add to my IIci running 7.1 to display the time in the menu bar as the Apple one does, but maybe with the option to on-click show a calendar of the month or something.

But really, I'm just open to test new stuff.

Does anyone know or is using a good solutions?

Not sure if Reminder Pro runs under System 7, but you are always welcome to upgrade to 8.1. :D

Since the page claims it is from 1997 and pre-dates Mac OS 8, I'd bet my boots on full compatibility :-)

But it isn't exactly what I was looking for. This is more like a scheduling / reminder software. I'm rather looking for something that replaces the menu bar clock with something way cooler :)

I thought u were looking for a taskbar reachable calendar app - which is what this is.

As far as the clock is concerned, one of my 100+ extentions/cpls has that in stock, too, but its a sub-menu option I deselected (got no use for another clock) and I can't remember where I saw that. :O

So does this replace your clock with a y2k compliant one?

Perhaps not quite what you had in mind, but "GoMac" does have a rather nice pop-up calendar accessed via its Menu/Task bar clock. See screenshots on the vers.1.x pages at the MG.

Of the available versions from the MG:
Vers. 1.4x runs in System 7.0 and later.
Vers. 1.5/1.6 for System 7.5.0 and later.
Vers. 2.0.2 for 7.5.3 and later.
Vers. 2.1.1 for Mac OS 7.6 and later.

I have used GoMac in the past and it does work as well as the screenshots show. However I never did keep it installed for long as I felt it was overkill having the Mac menu at the top of the screen and a 3rd party menu at the bottom, even though it did work fine and had useful features (and could auto-hide). If it could have made the Apple menubar hide like HyperCard can, I may have used it for longer.

It's possible that GoMac was more popular with folks moving to Macintosh if coming from a Win95/98/NT background.

It did hold a novelty factor though, in trying it out for size. - And was easily removed when bored with it.

p.s. It does require a color capable Mac '020 CPU and above.
Version 1.1.4 appears to be the last one to run on 7.1, at least that is, the v1.5 installer refuses to install below 7.5.

I think I've stumbled across a good compromise here.

For System 7.1, SuperClock! v4.0.4 of course :)
And Calendar Menu v3.2.1 <-- https Web Archive info-mac mirror.

Not to be confused with the MG's (1998) Calendar Menu v1.0 which is for PPC only, and is by another author, Calendar Menu v3.2.1 (1996) is by a Japanese author and is 68k encoded. I've tested it running OK in Mini vMac II, I think it will look pretty nice in your IIci.

Calendar Menu v3.2.1 is a Control Panel, its icon parks itself next to SuperClock's clock in the menu bar, so I think they complement each other nicely. It's both simple and elegant.

MTT, I remember using both of these, just never together for some reason! :o

I'm thinking that I found them at different time periods, then you forget about one and start using other things; my menu bar was always chuck full of INITs, especially the iconized items like Zipple, Menuette and TaskMenuBar, just all together.. yeah, I was a mess back then with all those GUI resources!! :D

Well, I installed Calendar Menu and even so its lacks a clock it comes closest to what Bolkonskij was talking about. So I guess I'll keep it.

Oh awesome finds, MTT. I need to try it on the IIci. Busy family day today, we just came back from riding our sleighs downhill and are on our way out to visit a local Christmas market. Busy busy, but I'll be back in time for our Bolo evening and may manage to try it before that!

Another thing I remember from the Amiga community is a utility called Limpidclock. The thing basically wrote time and calendar to the top right of your Desktop. Click me for a screenshot

Anyone ever seen something like that for Mac OS? I wonder how hard that would be to do (and how much of a resource hog)

Talk about being a trend-setter! Yes, do what Bolkonskij talks about. Always remember ;-)

I guess I'll keep it because it adds a simple calendar to my menu strip - which is what Bolkonskij was looking for, too.

Not the other way around. ;)

PS: Yes, I've seen such Desktop clock tools for Mac, but they had their own background images. And I like mine too much to settle for theirs. So I skipped them and forgot them. :O

Ones that spring to mind are those "widget" apps for Mac OS X only, not classic.
The konfabulous "Konfabulator" was the first (by at least 2 versions of the OS, before Apple ripped-off the idea with the intro of Dashboard in Tiger. Konfabulator eventually was bought by Yahoo and became "Yahoo! Widgets" before it died a quiet death.

But I'm not a fan of Widgets and prefer to use a stand-alone app called DesktopCalendar by Takashi Hamada. I don't know if Takashi wrote any newer versions, I've used his calendar since 10.2 Jaguar. Screenshot shows it running in Snow Leopard. His Calendar comes in two flavors, a Dock calendar and a Desktop calendar (as in the screenshot).

Back to on topic matters;
I've made a garden page for CalendarMenu 3.21, the Control Panel's name is co-joined Mac fashion, and not separated as I had first typed it out.

Found another wee Calendar app, it's part of the 7th Heaven Utilities located at the MG.

The calendar has a load of features, includes a small clock, shows a (changeable) picture if wanted.

Very System 7.0 friendly. Quite spiffy.

You can actually use both of these tools side by side. :)

I actually tried SuperClock and it works very well on my IIci, so we can consider this solved I guess :)
