Hi, glad to be here.

The name's Franck.

I have 2 system 7 macs: an se/30 with 7.0.1 and a 190cs with 7.5.3.

I intend to create new apps/games for them, I'm still wet behind the ears regarding macs 68k coding but thanks to the abundant documentation that can be found online I make good progress.

Hi Franck,

great to have you here! Sounds like you and your two Macs fit right in! Let us know their names if they have any :-)

At least your 190cs should be able to browse the site / forum with iCab 2.9 :)

What kind of stuff do you look into creating? Set on a programming language yet?

No, they don't have names.

I'm using ThinkC 5.

For the applications I don't really know yet (maybe an assembler as I couldn't find any suitable) but I'll port a puzzle game on b&w macs and most probably this: http://www.agidev.com/projects/nagi/ for colors and probably more.

wow, that sounds like awesome plans! You have a professional background in programming or just as a hobby?

If there's anything our Mac games have been lacking the last few years, it's a bunch of new (old) games :-)

I didn't know about the NAGI project but it actually looks really interesting. It does seem to require, however, SDL which we don't have on System 7?

Anyway, install a Hotline client on your 190cs and join our Hotline group. We have source snippets on the server and have a nice chat group where we talk all things System 7 tech & more :-)

I do programming for a living but also as a hobby (as you can see on my website).

Yes, obviously the video & audio backends of NAGI need to be entirely recoded.

Unfortunately, I don't have a network card on the powerbook or on the se/30.

Hi hithhkr, back when I last owned a PB 1400, I used to use a Dell brand PCMCIA Ethernet card with it, using a modified driver that's still downloadable from there.

The Dell brand isn't a requisite, the chipset is, which was 3C589C, or 3C589D.

If you scroll down that page to "Known Working", you'll spot a few 190's and the chipsets that worked.

I took a quick look ebay and amazon, US$15 is a reasonable price but the scalpers are there too with $40 - $50 asking prices.

Important - must include the connecting dongle !

Anyway, it could be an option, should you need a ethernet solution for the 190.

oh and I rock system7today on my SE/30. it's awfully slow though in standard 16Mhz but kind of fun too but confess to generally having my G3 imac open as well so scan through the threads then reply via the old girl. on the se/30 now replying :)

if you want a challenge, I would like a working SSL email to work from the SE/30 & a web authoring program to work on my SE/30 so if you want to build those, that would be awesome lol

Pleased to meet you!

Do keep us posted on how the development is going. And I know this is a System 7 forum, but if you have anything that also targets System 6 I'd be interested in trying it on my Mac SE.

Welcome to the System 7 Today forums, Franck!! 8)

Interestingly enough, in the event the Powerbook just happens to have a built-in dial-up modem, then Juno and NetZero, at least in the U.S. and possibly Canada, each offer ten hours a month of free Internet access.

I'm not sure if there would be any easy way to share an Ethernet connection to a Mac via it's serial networking, SCSI or a modem, so that's where you get into the cost of getting and setting up either Ethernet or possibly WiFi adapters. My guess would be that the 190cs should be modern enough to do wireless as well ;)

We also get pretty excited when our programming friends join our ranks with both your Classic 68k Macs, so we're extra happy to have you over!! :D
