So I've been trying out this new (at least to me) Mac OS in a browser, and while not perfect compared to running it in emulation, it's such a clever hack I had to post some of its neat functionalities ![]() So not everything works 100%, but things like rebooting, importing archives and files, editing docs, installing and running INITs, testing out new 68k software and games, this thing is a champ! ![]() This opens up a way to play with most of the Mac OS for the casual user on app-limited devices like early Chomebooks with no Android apps-store access or they simply don't care enough to setup a real emulator, either reason is fine which is great! (Now it just needs to have an offline mode, lol ![]() But here's the real hidden gem though: the site says it can create a LAN by using a unique subdomain! So let's say some of us chose to go to https://7.macos8.app then uploaded and opened QuickPopUp from the MG or used the LAN games or the simple chat app inside the emulator: they would all work as if we were all on the same network!! Is that crazy or what? ![]() The links are system7.app and macos8.app ∙ this project is insanely cool don't you think?

Sweat! Just tried it -worked superbly this time. Did not work on Firefox Legacy Mac OS 10.8 the last time I tired it. Thanks for sharing! ![]() This reminded me of WhosIt.There's tread, with the links to the other System 7 and 8 in a browser.

Yeah! I think they've been updating these two, and the concept of using a virtual LAN was simply awesome!! ![]() I did forget to mention, you can also export archives and files as a zip from the emulator as well, which means you can actually do a little something in it and take it back out! Sadly, the sound control panel does not allow switching from the sound quality from 16-bit to 8-bit, which means playing MP3 files using MpegDec won't work I'm pretty sure I tried fiddling with it but maybe they could tweak that for users somehow?

Not really up my alley, but it's fun that people keep our old OS alive

I agree with Knezzen but it's impressive, nonetheless. The thing I absolutely dislike about it is that I'm dependent on the goodwill of a third party not to pull the plug (or make it a subscription service or whatever). And I don't even know that person. One of the reasons I still use my old gear is because I owe it, I control it and I can make it do whatever I want (well, to a certain degree ;-) ) and that won't ever change. So I gladly invest the 100 bucks for getting a recap every 15 years if that helps me to keep my independence. Still, the thing could prove helpful is for quickly testing a software for taking screenshots or removing a virus.

I agree 100 percent! and this is exactly is why I said before, "maybe we could test setting something like this up "just because we can and make it our own S7T rig" ![]() Ideally I would love to simply be able to host it locally to load it from any of my web browsers at home for a quick and dirty virtual Mac. Then all my Macs, both real and virtual, can connect with each other! ![]() Also remember that this hack can give my super-old Chromebooks new wings since most everything else is outdated on them.. well, at least until I find a suitable Linux OS to switch them to ![]() And this could also serve my other project as well, which is to connect my folks place to mine to create a remote-LAN, allowing me to use VNC from any Classic Mac instead of online, modern remote desktop services.

So I did a little more fiddling today: by running iNES 1.2, which needed the appearance manager, it switched the audio to 44Hz 8-bit and MPEGDEC then played all my MP3s like a dream! ![]() iNES itself is LAN aware too, so twice the coolness!

Explain? I can’t play mp3 on my se/30. Can you make that happen?

Easy-peasey ![]() Download and install MPEGDEC from the MG here: https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/mpegdec Then round up your favorite MP3s and load them into your SE/30. The final part is in switching your sound to 8-bit audio (typically done with the System Sound Control Panel) since it doesn't seem to work with any 16-bit audio settings. (the audio sounds like total garbage) I added some side notes below that might help out as well: In the case of the emulator, the Sound CP fails to run, so I needed the assitance of another program to switch that in the emulator, in this case it was another emulator, iNES version 1.2. In emulation, the System Software seems to always default to 16-bit audio, so I always make the bit adjustments in the Sound CP before opening MEPGDEC because the OS does not allow you to switch audio bit-depth while a program is using the audio feature (although I think it does allow the change while the audio is not playing). Let me know if you get it going! ![]() Just remember, the slower the processor, the lower the settings should be, both in the CP and MPEGDEC's prefs (you can use trial-and-error there). Good luck!!

Thanks Cballero, I have program already, but it struggled to play and pretty much locked up. I hadn’t thought about changing the settings to 8-bit audio. I’ll give it a try

I don't think it's realistic to play an mp3 file on a SE/30, even when set to 8bit? My upgraded IIci (68030 @ 40Mhz) can, but it basically uses up every cpu cycle and you can't do anything else. Anyone successfully tested mp3 playback on a SE/30 ? Knezzen, what about your SE/30?

So as a last-ditch effort to force MP3 playback, you can (with enough installed RAM) run the program from a RAM disk and possibly convert your MP3 to 32kbps for smoothest playback ![]() I'm not sure if turning off virtual memory would also help in this case? Also, defragging your drive may also yield potentially a slight performance improvement, but then everything done in in unison may all aid in the efforts being made, you know? Another option is to just convert your MP3s to AIFF, which will definitely play-back on 68k Macs, but they will be much bigger files, too!

Good suggestions, worth a try. I can second the AIFF suggestion, but file sizes are just huge. And don't use the official Quicktime player but rather one of those small dedicated AIFF players for better performance. There were plenty and I'm sure some are on the Mac Garden. (I think I've uploaded at least one)

Haha! I even found a neat blog page outlining the use of MPEGDEC and even points to pretty much (almost all of) the same tricks I mentioned! I had a couple more, hee hee! (the usual modern browser warning)https://metalbabble.wordpress.com/2020/09/14/playing-mp3s-on-68k-macintosh/ Hey! This is a nice blog!
