I  am looking for Amiga ROMS in the old UAE 0.6 format. The more recent versions are accepted by my vintage UAE (error message "ROM file might be corrupted...").

You mean not accepted?

That's an interesting quest. I've discussed this with Knez the other day. Apart from the fact that you cannot access most sources for stuff like this these days due to JavaScript reliance and SSL enforcing, there's also the issue with format changes that leads to ROMs not being recognized on older emulators anymore.

Seems like it'd be a good idea to preserve the past. Hm....

The darn thing is that UAE seems to othwerwise work just fine, but it suffers from the same ROM format change problem that MESS does.

Yes.
Has your search been successful yet?

Well, I'd be interested in those ROMs as well. Maybe our web detective Cashed can locate them? They ought to be out there on some archived web page from the late 90s / early 2000's ...

I bought an entire set of Amiga ROMs from Cloanto(?). I think you can purchase the entire ROM set on the Android App Store fairly inexpensively. I do not have a clue if they are in the format you are looking for. I did buy the whole set a few years back. They worked fine for me. I ended up getting their entire Amiga Forever package, which I think just uses UAE for a base. In the end I found the whole setup to confusing and it seemed to me it was mainly just for playing games. I was/am intrigued by the Amiga OS and am somewhat sad that I missed that adventure back in the day.

To explore old Amiga like things, I installed Morph OS on on MacPPC hardware. I just remained confused by it all. I do think endeavors like Morph OS and Haiku do a really fine job of keeping the design and spirit of older "obsolete" OSes alive.

Ahhh...that's right, I should actually have one of those Amiga Classix discs! You made me remember, thanks. Just threw the disc into my 8600 and I am fetching the files.

And wove, you're spot on about Amiga Forever being just a fancy front-end for UAE emulation. I read the Italian guy behind Cloanto actually never shared any royalty with the emulator programmers but likes to point at others in the Amiga community for "misbehavior".

Man, if there's ever been a computing community that has been toxic, it's the Amigans. Still, they churn out amazing new software and hardware on a near monthly basis.

There’s still big rivalry between Amiga and ST owners in the uk today. And yes still lot of augments in Amiga circles even between which systems were best. I never had either but many of my friends did so I played on both after school. Either were great 16 bit machines with die hard fans. As a 13-14 year old just playing games a couldn’t say I could tell the difference. From everything i read these days the Amiga was graphically better and slightly better overall but the ST had midi
I can’t say i liked either of the OSs which looked pretty awful in horrid colour schemes and blockie low res icons. All that said i wouldn’t mind one now for retro gaming. Maybe there’s an emulator that would work on my g3 imac be interesting to try.

haha, sweet dreams, Mr. Nightshift :-) ...and I actually found two 1.3 and 3.1 Kickroms on that old CD of mine from the mid 2000s. We'll soon know if they work with UAE 0.6.

@Neal_SE30 - There was *never* any "competition" between Amiga and Atari ST.

The Amiga was a multimedia behemoth and a promise for a better future in IT outside of corporate America. He showed what a creative PC should look like, years before Apple got to finalize the Macintosh into *the* system for creative workers.

The Atari ST was never anything but the mental afterbirth of a failed business wannabe tycoon who got booted from Commodore, because he tried to stack the upper management with his own offspring.

TOS => Tramiel's sad excuse for an Operating System.

We Amigians used to make fun of those Atari underlings like Knights of the Realm looking down on the servs who had to clean their pissoirs. :D

@Bolkonskij - Yeah, UAE accepted your ROMS - and then took down B-II halfway through the booting process. :(

You're confusing the Amiga with the ST now ;)

Amigas where for playing kids games, the Atari was for real work (look at all the wonderful music made on the Atari).

So yeah, no competition. The Atari was always in the forefront.
*hides behind his Atari STacy, Atari Falcon and a pile of STe's*

Ouch. Well, I just tested on my 8600 and it booted right up to the kickstart screen. I just don't have any adf files to try but that's something for the upcoming weekend. I'll post what I could get to run :-)

@Knezzen - What was the term Atarians used for pre-emptive multitasking? Ah yeah, rigth, NCD - like in "No Can Do". :D :D :D
