Somebody else into listening MOD tunes on their 68k Macs? For those who don't know, .mod files started on the Amiga back in 1987 and were kind of the first widely popular way to listen to music on your computer. Mostly instrumental with that distinct "chiptunes" sound, they play exceptionally well on even low-end Macs like the Mac LC. I love to listen to them when I'm on my IIci. Here's the wiki entry via old net (retro browser compatible). I'm using Sound Trecker which comes with playlists, lots of ways to tune these tracks and a background option so you can work in photoshop while listening to those soft jazz tunes ... So let's hear if I'm the only one :-) |

I used to listen to mod files way back when I couldn't afford an Apple, even if I'd offered to sell a kidney for it.

I hath moddeth a lot as well! Such a creative use of digital audio technology and so space-saving, too! ![]() I remember searching for and playing plenty of pop synth tunes that went so nicely with whatever game or file I was working on for school or work! ![]() Among my favorites were Axel-F, a rock-synth version of Greensleeves, Depeche Mode's enjoy the silence (and I almost want to say that this one was also featured in a (most like) shareware or possibly freeware game and a few other neat titles I found at the time. I'm in shock at the number of Mod files that are still available online though! ![]() While I absolutely love The Sound-Trecker, I discovered another 68k MOD player that I think handles a couple of additional sound settings better, at least with the emulated 68k Mac I tested this app on. It's called ModPlayer, and while I enjoy the Sound-Trecker interface more, I enjoyed the additional sound adjustments I noticed in ModPlayer when I compared them both! But both are a real joy to play your library of tiny Mod files, especially as background music on your 68k Macs!

Thanks for the mention of MODplayer, I wasn't aware of its existence. Need to check it out. I think I ran into a potential memory leak with Sound Trecker 2.2 and the way it handles playlists but I haven't had the time to confirm. But it just seems to suck up all my precious 28 megabyte (32MB minus 4 for System 7) ... Any good sources for mod sounds? I found that modarchive.org has tons of other formats like .xm too which makes it difficult to find some good stuff. I'm really just looking for the good 'ol mod files.

On a sidenote, I stumbled upon a nifty little tool called "JustOgg to AIFF" that can convert modern day OggVorbis audio files to AIFF. Another once popular Amiga MultiMedia format, that now plays fine on 68k Macs.

AIFF is awesome and for us in emulation our collections can be as big as our mounted volumes, but if fast, real 68k Macs can run it, a real space-saver would be to use MP3s with MPEGdec ![]() Although a real treat would be to reskin MPEGdec to either display as a normal Mac window (the simplest and compatible with Kaleidoscope schemes) or a cool, updated stylized Mac window like the original QuickTime window for example (but that would entail a little more work, like somehow importing QuickTime's window resources, so that option's a little less likely).

Hey, those MOD files from them ISO discs sound real good. I am unpacking all of that booty onto my data volume. 24GB and I thought I'd never get to fill that up.

Yesterday visited the Aminet which is the software respository of the Amigans. It has a mod section and most of them play fine with e.g. Mod Player on System 7. They're usually encoded as an LHA archive, so you'll need MacLHA to unpack them - which works fine. Been trying out some new mod tunes lately ... posting this in case somebody else is interested in trying out mod tunes :-)

Hi, You can also try your luck here: http://modland.com/pub/modules/Protracker/ for Protracker modules. I also found a tracker called Meditor here: https://www.vintageapplemac.com/files/utils/Meditor%20D63.sit but I can't make it work under Basilisk so far.
