When I saw the excitement in the news over California's ban on (evil) fossil fuel powered vehicles I couldn't help but think back to my early days of "automotive individualism". Back in them days getting your driver's license was tantamount to being handed a document that said: "You are free to leave this place and travel wherever you want". "Roll on, for as long as the road will carry you! " - used to be the motto of a time when "Freedom" meant you could mind your own business and demand the same courtesy from the rest of society. Fast forward to the present and you'll find yourself facing a future where self-propelled motion (which is what the "auto" in "automotion" stands for) shall soon be the privilige of an elite few. For if you buy an electric vehicle you have to pay a lot more, in exchange for a dramatic reduction in range. Just like on our modern day computers every activity will be monitored, analyzed and if need be restricted. We'll have to pass dozens of security gates to keep us form going places or seeing things considered "harmful" by the powers to be. Domain names blacklisted, lockdowns being automatically enforced and everyone not connected the righ way to the great collective will be deemed a "security risk". Indeed, one of the most common accusations I face when I tell total strangers about my use of a vintage computer system is: "You are putting us all at risk by using a computer system that no longer receives proper security updates!" And so I wonder how much longer we'll be granted a choice about it. :O |

Life is to full of world ecomonitcs forum dystopia. I hope we wake up to it sooner and realize we live in the best time in history and we use the challenges of the time to continue to make it a better world for all without destroying what we've already acheived as human beings!

Well, I for one doubt that we'll live "in the best of all times", for way too many people have an itch to turn it all upside down. Btw, I am in the process of "cleaning up" behind me - wherever I can - as I feel the heavy hand of "mandated harmony" clamping down all around us. So forgive me for shortening that epic text of mine retroactively.
