Hello!

Been using Macs for a long time, and was feeling nostalgic for an old Mac.

Not strictly System 7, but was maybe looking to get a PowerPC, something that can run Mac OS 8 and Mac OS 9?

Can these old systems, still browse the web? Are there any guides out there on getting back into using older machines and using them in day-to-day life?

I figured if anyone would know, you guys would 🙏

Haha, welcome to our friendly little forum, macuser1978!

Well, you can get everything and nothing really. ;-)

It entirely depends on what you want to do with the machine. I know we have strict 68k proponents here, but personally I love my Power Mac 8600 / 200 and I think those machines are about the fastest and coolest (easy to repair!) machines for running System 7.6.1 AND OS 9.1.

If you can get one, I'd opt for a 8600 or a 9600 for speed, accessibility and upgrade options. A G3 upgrade helps a lot in terms of speed though I don't want one for mine as I "appreciate" the simpleness of it :-)

Yes, you can still browse the web with them but the web the way it was 20 years ago. Check out our forum topic of websites that work with System 7. There's a small resurgence of these low-spec high-content websites and I personally love visiting them with iCab 2.9 on my 8600. Like System 7 Today :-)

Don't expect those Macs to perform like an Intel Mac or even being able to access Facebook, Spotify and the like. :-)

We have a Tutorial section that covers some of the stuff on how to use these machines today. Like e-mail, printers, web radio and such. Just read up.

I have several macs, no doubt about it i love the older system 7 but I couldn’t have even got my old machines working it wasn’t for having a more modern bridge computer and i found a 2000 imac revb 400mhz g3, love it! it has osx10.3.9 on it so runs most sites although forget youtube or facebook. 10.3.9 connects perfectly to new computers but also has os9 as well linking back to older macs. A lovely screen and fun for gaming on but ultimately it was cheap, i paid £20 for it.
