Hello,

Following recommendations from other threads, I am using the LaserWriter 8.1 driver to print documents from WordPerfect/Word to PS format and then convert to PDF via Adobe Acrobat 3.0.

The conversion almost works though I still get some differences in the embedded graphics of the final PDF file.

Are there recommended settings or a better method to print the PS file?

I am running System 7.1 on a Mac IIci.

Hi Derek!

not sure I fully understand (might be the early hour, it's 5:30 am here ... drinking a coffee in quiet before the kids wake up). :-)

You print to a Postscript file and then you use Acrobat 3.0 to convert it to a PDF?

How do the graphics look different?

What are you using to print? I'd suspect not your old StyleWriter II anymore?

Does the same problem occur if you try to print directly from the PostScript file? (assuming you have a compatible printer connected)

When print to a PS file and distill into a PDF with Adobe Acrobat 3.0; then print to my StyleWriter II, I notice that some graphics are rendered differently (different line or curve style) or not in same position like equation superscripts versus printing from Word/WordPerfect directly to the StyleWriter II.

I use the LaserWriter 8.1 driver to provide the save to PS option as it is not available on the StyleWriter.

I am using the Laserwriter v8.1 driver for EPS File output. Would switching to v8.5 be of benefit?

Not that I am aware of, but of course, give it a try and report back! I'm all eager to hear!

My gut feeling is more like the conversion process with Acrobat 3.0 screwing up things. I'm thinking about other apps that handle ps files and have printing capabilities...

Have you tried loading and printing the ps file in Photoshop? I'd be interested to see if the distortions remain. If yes, that'd definitely point towards Acrobat. If no, chances are the ps file already comes with the distortions.

I don't have any specific version in mind I could recommend (maybe someone else can?) but one that supports postscript files and printing. Try 3.x and see if it works.

There ought to be other apps with full ps support out there. The interesting part really is to find out during which step of your workflow the error occur. (when saving as a postscript file or when converting via Acrobat)

On a related question, are there any patches for Adobe 3.0 posted in Macintoshgarden?

That's the one you're using?

Don't know. You have a Garden account? Post your question regarding updates over there. Some folks on the Garden have been avid users of Acrobat throughout the years and might know more.

If it is Acrobat you are talking about then try this:

ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/mac/3.x/

If it is another adobe product you refer to, then go up the directory tree to ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/ and look there.

I found it best to output directly to the Adobe PS Driver, as it offers all the options required to produce a ready-for-print PDF file later on via the Distiller.

There is a patch that should be applied to that version, to fix some PDF display errors.

Yes, that is the version I installed.  I didn’t see a patch on the Adobe site.

I downloaded that patch from an Adobe legacy SW site and it got me to reader version 3.01 (1997).
