Hello World, following an invitation I registered myself on the forum. But to be frank, I feel a bit misplaced, as I am a hard core fan of System 8.1 Platinum UI. So can I still play here? |

No, sir. You have to leave instantly ;-) haha, just kidding. Welcome to the System 7 Today Forums! Looks are a subjective thing. I remember people using Aaron to make their System 7 look like the "upcoming Copland" which was very Platinum style. Never understood why but that was also a part of the System 7 experience. So you fit in here and you don't need 8.1 to enjoy the OS look you have come to appreciate. BTW - is your username refering to the CPU of your Mac? A Quadra owner?

Well, I actually do need Platinum 8.1 - so much so, that I abandoned my dreaded Windoze 10 system over it and moved most of my private data stuff back to my vintage Mac setup. And once I got started with that, it was like a craze: I traveled back in time and it feels good to live bubble free. And yes, I do work on a Quadra setup, buts its a virtual machine (Basilisk-II). The 68040 should have ruled the roost, not that buggy Pentium monstrosity Intel came up with.

Welcome to S7T, 68040! Just like you I have moved most of my computing to my old machines. Using my PowerMac 5500 most of the time nowadays :)รง

Hello Knezzen, I decided to become a resistance fighter in the struggle against the status quo in IT. The days of personal freedom are long gone and these days we pay thousands of $ for hardware we can no longer control and software we may no longer own. My Smartphone knows more about me than I do and it puts up a heck of a fight, if I want it to tell me about it. The same goes for my prior Windoze PC (flashed it with Linux by now ;-), that *constantly* nagged me about updates and extras to install. It felt more like riding a bike that left the factory half-finished, than owning a piece of high tech equipment. My vintage Mac just works and runs and feels good. And I can resize my windows w/o corner hunting first. Gosh, whoever decided to remove resize gadgets from a Windows environment?? I don't like this brave new world of online storage, secret updates, unplaned reboots and never ending data transfers behind my back. This is not what we Eggheads had in mind, when we helped kick off the PC revolution, so many decades ago.

I just got to say -you've come to the right place, 68040! We very much feel like you. I'm also using my 8600 ("Norm") most of the time at home for the very reason you describe. I can't do completly without a modern computer though. Be it printing & buying postage or administration of my web projects through my provider's web interface. But it's reduced to a minimum. I've also dropped out of most (Anti)Social Media and don't miss it. I don't frequent "modern Mac" forums anymore for the ignorance of most of its users. I had people pointing me out as being silly using "the insecure Mac OS" while at the same time they run Big Sur(veillance) and upload their personal data to a cloud they have no clue of how it works or where it's even located. Talk about crazyness in today's IT! I've having super fun using computers (again!), getting the most out of Norm and finding creative ways to do the things I want to do with it. It's a truly personal computing and I'm not ready to give it up any time in the future!

Security seems like sort of a moot point on a computer architecture that no one is actively targeting, nevermind that it is largely incapable of accessing modern sites and services in the first place.

I partially understand the concern. Everyone using it essentially has admin privileges etc. But then just like you state correctly, nobody is actively targeting System 7 Macs. To the best of my knowledge, there aren't dedicated tools available. That immediately takes 95% of today's hackers off the list. The necessary work and know-how to hack my System 7 Mac is high compared to other platforms. That will likely put off the majority of ill-meaning individuals. And like you say, the typical pitfalls (malicious JavaScript on websites, e-mail attachments etc.) don't apply to my 8600. That's not saying it's a "safe platform" and someone dedicated to gain access will manage one way or the other (probably with user help) BUT it's not as insecure as people or Apple want you to believe. In fact, I personally deem it a lot safer than running Sierra, High Sierra or some other recently abandoned version of OSX.

I hear these security concerns all the time, yet on my Windoze PC half a dozen services run out of the box, of which I got no clue what the heck they are even doing there. And with each install there are more of them. And I studied computer engineering! As soon as I switched on my latest high tech tablet Google informed me, that they just have to push auto-updates on me, collect my location data ah and yes - could I pleeaase give them permission to collect (anonymously of course) my usage data as well. Our governments push Corona apps on us that collect our whereabouts, the people we meet, the trains we ride and the stores we visit. All for the good cause of course. But I am supposed to justify using a computer system that does nothing else than what I want it to do? Because that was the original idea behind the PC. It was supposed to be a *Personal* Computer, not a an aide for corporate profiteering or the betterment of society. My machine, my adventure and my rules. Simply unlocking the bootloader on my new tablet took me two days(!) and I pride myself of being good at such sheyit. All so I could uninstall those pesky data collecting apps that I just don't want. Heck, I paid almost a thousand $ for this thing - yet I can not even uninstall stuff I don't need or want w/o voiding the warranty and burning the midnight oil doing it. I am no longer the owner of my computers. I am just a tenant who gets kicked in the balls by my data greedy landlords all the time.
