If you look at old shareware discs or BBS dumps like BBS in a box you may encounter a FKEY folder. Does that have to do with the F1 to F12 keys? Nope. FKEYs actually stem back from way back when Mac keyboards didn't even have those keys.

Read more about what FKEY are and how they may enhance your personal computer experience:

Feedback (as always) is welcome (like the article? like to read this kind of stuff? etc. :)

FKEYs can provide some handy little tools.
But they're hardly intuitive.
And the almost secretive management and installation of them means they're easily forgotten about.
I think Apple missed a trick not promoting and developing these further.
For e.g. d oing a screenshot is easy when you know how. But how are you supposed to know? At least there is a Print Screen button that actually does something in other OS...

Personally, I use the built-in Shift-Command-4 (screenshot of selection) frequently.
GetColor (brings up the colour palette with your clicked colour selected) is another I use occasionally.

I tried the Fit to Mac and Volume Setter FKEYs on this site, but they didn't work for me in a quick tryout.

Thanks for the article.?

Really appreciate the feedback @ovalking and mac-cellar. FKEYs always felt like a hack of the OS, you're about them being totaly unintuitive @ovalking. Maybe that's why Apple never really endorsed them. I think find a couple of them useful. Not sure why they wouldn't work with you though. It's usually just drag & drop and hitting the right key combo.

Just an update - I've since added a few more FKEYs to the article :-)
