I am trying to get my Powerbook 1400cs/166 connected to the network I have a 3Com Etherlink III (PCMCIA card) and I have followed what it says on this page http://www.floodgap.com/retrotech/mac/enet3c589/ but I am not having any luck as yet has any body got any answers how to get it to work. |

Seem to remember having to add a space at the beginning of the extension name so that it would load first at boot... But then that was long ago, i'm now using another pcmcia/ethernet card brand.

Well, network stuff always tends to be tough and/or lucky shots. Just to get it right (I don't have a working PowerBook nor a PCMCIA card, so no first-hand experience - sorry) ... You're trying to connect through TCP/IP to your LAN for accessing the almighty Internet? Have you tried MacPing (or simliar) to see how far you can get and where packet losses occur? (e.g. try to ping the IP address of your router? If that works, the IP adress of the DNS server etc.)

Not getting far enough to do any testing as not even getting any flashing lights on my card to say there's any life there.I know to card works as test it on a Windows 95 Laptop. Christopher.

UPDATE: Thanks to Neal(Neal_SE30) who hooked me up with various bits including a Orinoco Gold Wifi card which works perfectly as I am using it to post this message on a PowerBook G3 Lombard. I want to use this on my Powerbook 1400CS using System 7(currently installed os 7.6) all seems to work as the card shows up on the desktop and I have installed the drivers download from link on System 7 today Drivers resource. but for what ever reason it does not show up to select it in TCPIP or Appletalk am I missing something ? anyone have any ideas. Christopher.

I've got the same exact card, and the exact same driver worked fine on my 1400, albeit under Mac OS 8.1. I do not have 7.6.1 installed on the system, but it is set up in a 7.5.2 dual boot, I'll see if I can get it working there too and report back. This driver seems to be quite the pain to handle sometimes though, website notes various incompatibilities and instabilities. Thank you 3lectr1c any help much appreciated. It just seems as all the lights are on but nobodys home. I must load the drivers/extensions as it would tell me that I have inserted a card but there are no drivers for it. Christopher.

If your open to it, adding a Mac OS 8.1 system folder for testing may let you know if it's a system and/or network configuration issue and using the system folder bless trick, or helper program, should be all you'll need to switch back and forth. I resorted to this method for many a hardware test in the past with good success
