If Apple ever releases the System 7 source code, could programmers build upon the code easily? The one thing I've always wanted ties into what Bolkonskij just posted about: Macsbug. I haven't tried it yet, but it got me thinking that the OS would be much better if instead of freezing the computer, an error message could pop up and say the application quit. And further, sometimes you get errors so bad that a screen appears making you restart, and other times you get that Error Type 2/3 or whatever and you've got to restart due to instability. More stability and workarounds for freezing/crashes, as well more support for multitasking etc is what I'd want. I'm not sure we'll ever both get the source code, and find people willing to program for it. |

Well, you can virtually do anything, it's just a question of time and effort ... :-) Seriously though, I think including MacsBug and making it appear in a maybe more user friendly way (as you described) would be a top priority. I'd also love to see an enhanced extension manager. But then really, what are the chances Tim Apple would ever open-source Mac OS? Very slim I fear. What would be more promising might be a something like a compatible new OS written with FPGAs in mind. But even that would be a tremendous undertaking and I don't know how many patents of Apple that would infringe on. I just know Cupertino has good lawyers ... But then really part the fun is to take Mac OS as pure and stable as it is and make it truly yours by personalizing it and adding all the INITs, Control Panels and stuff that YOU want and need, isn't it? So maybe it rather takes more add-ons than an OS rewrite to make it fit for the future.ˇ

But hey the source code for 7.1.x has been leaked  maybe someone someday can look into it for you

Another issue would be the different versions of System 7. Maybe the mods wouldn't all work on every version. Then we'd have to fight about which version got priority  7.6.1 would be my vote since it covers more ground.
