Hi,
Is there any audio reader that can play radio streams working on System7 68k ?
I usually use SoundJamMP, by entering the stream Url, works fine but only on PPC :/
I've checked a bit in the Garden, but only found PPC apps for that so far.

I think MPEGdec might be the one you're after.  Here's the official website that is still on (and compatible with Netscape 4 btw)

http://www.jwgdesign.com/mpegdec/about.htm

It says that it can do mp3 streaming with Open Transport.

Give it a try  (and r eport back please) :)u

Thanks !
This looks like it would be the thing (nice page btw).
But I can't manage to make it work...

As I understand from the readme, one can't enter a Url directly in the player.
One have to pass by a browser. Create a new file type in the "file helpers" of the browser's preferences, so that when entering the stream Url in the browser address bar it would open the player to read it.

Alas , I've tried that on two systems, 7.5.3 on 68k, and 9.2.2 on PPC , with Explorer 4.0.1 and 4.5, and it just continuously downloads the stream to a file, with out reading it or opening the player to do so...
I must do something wrong.

I have no experience with MPEGdec, unfortunately. (my SE really isn't up to the task and I use SoundJam MP on my 8600) Maybe some 68k Mac users can help us out here.

What you usually need is just a playlist file containing the URL. Then you add it like yet another local mp3 file to a playlist. Instead of playing it from a local source it should connect and start streaming.

Try that with this one, I tested it and it starts fine with SoundJam MP:

Does that work with MPEGdec?

I've had no luck getting MPEGDec to play a stream either.
No problem with locally stored files though.

Tried with Netscape 4.8. Played around with settings but not found a working set. Bolkonskij's playlist was ok with Soundjam, but MPEGDec does nothing.
Note you don't need a 68K machine to try it out.

So since MikeTomTom posted a solution on the Macintosh Garden here I decided I should give this a try on my Mac IIci ("Diane") running System 7.1.

I've used iCab 2.9 to fetch a .m3u file for a radio station from surfmusic.de. I then changed the file type (to: Plst) and creator code (to: JESW) as he suggested, which made the file being recognized and double-clickable.

It wouldn't play though. I then opened the file with BBedit and saw the "culprit" - the URL was a https one. I made it a http one, crossing my fingers that the radio station would support http connections. Saved the changes. Another try in MpegDec and hey, this works now! I'm listening to a modern web radio stream on a 1989 Macintosh IIci with a 68030@40 Mhz CPU. Wow!

Mind you, this is the low-end. It munches every free cycle Diane has, but it runs fine, which is pretty amazing. Here's a screenshot I took from the IIci while playing backing:

(never mind the chaos on the desktop. We have little kids ;-) )

The question remaining is how we get MikeTomTom to sign up and frequent our forum here, giving his (in his words) "ancient Centris" 68k Mac another reason to exist. Ideas discussed thus far include blackmail and kidnapping, but maybe we can just trust his reason? ;-)

It just baffled me how the program seemed to work for just a very few so I'm glad you asked about it first, Galgot! I'm happy that spurred Mike on to get MPEGDec going! You gave me a clear mission and now we've all benefited from it greatly! :D

I had been really wanting streaming using MPEGDec to work myself, but after many failed attempts I was sure that it was broken. I'm sure back in the day, more people knew of the program's mysteries, but as any other software, it quickly got replaced by shinier software toys that only run on newer Macs!! :o

It was the least I could do to return the favor of showing me how to de-skin MPEGDec to let the OS dictate its look and feel with Aaron and/or the Platinum appearance extensions or with full-blown Kaleidoscope schemes.. you rock!!! ;)

Still no luck here.

Whatever I drop on MPEGDec is ignored.

I created the text file as instructed in the MacGarden thread, but no go.

I created text files for streams I know that work. These work in SoundJam but not MPEGDec.

I changed https to http, but still no go (both work in SoundJam).

Note the correct Creator is JESW (not JSEW))

Maybe your .pls file is not in plain text ?...
Download mine here:
http://galgot.free.fr/transit/Fip.pls.sit
Once expanded,
drag "Fip.pls" on the small rectangle on top-right side of the MpegDec window,
should stream Fip radio station. May take 2-3 sec to connect to the stream.
To change the radio, open "Fip.pls" with BBEdit (in BBEdit -> open, then make sure "Show -> any Files" is selected), and change the Fip stream address to the one you like.
Hope this can help.

Hi galgot. Your Fip.pls requires a little fix.
You have the Creator Type as Plst and the File Type as JESW

This should be reversed; Creator Type JESW and File Type Plst -then it will be double-clickable ;-)

p.s. Thanks also. That radio station works great in MpegDec.

Yay! Welcome to yet another Classic Mac watering-hole, Mike! :)

Lol (and this is totally at myself!) because I've only gotten the radio station stream to work (on my phone's Android port of Basilisk II btw) using Mac OS 8.1 by dropping the file iCab creates onto the MPEGDec when I enter the radio station's link, but it working by any means was a total win in my book! ;)

So while I troubleshoot my latest Chromebook to do some serious Classic Mac-ing (it's not wanting to run any Android apps, including BII) my next item on my MPEGDec to-do list is to see if we can ID as many radio stations, and possibly other streaming sources, so we have not only a (I can't believe I'm finally saying this!!!) working MEPGDec, but something to have some real-world uses for a Classic Mac streaming MP3 player besides the obvious! :D

You have no idea how mind-blowingly cool this app is now! Can you even  imagine? I mean, the options are literally limitless! So besides playing our MP3 music libraries (with art, song titles and all, when the art is formatted small enough!), we can also add setting-up our own streaming libraries of whatever we desire, right? I'm envisioning having our own collections of saved podcasts, our personal audio book collections, including subsets like children songs (for me in four languages including French and German!!), and track me with me for a second, streaming lessons of anything you can think of, languages, elementary and above subjects, basically a simple platform for any audio-based online learning, even your own mini, truly low-tech requirement podcasting, converted educational (think conferences, seminars and the like) instructional tapes, along with the given short children stories, poetry books, even recordings of old radio shows and so much, much more! And I totally know that all of our little 68k Macs totally rock already without this next-gen audio capability, but this just totally adds even more audio rockness!!! Wait, is rockness even a word? :o lol

Totally dig your ideas, cballero. It's awesome. Let's broadcast a retro Mac radio stream able to be listened to from any 68k Macintosh :-)
