The Software Guide on System 7 Today is our guide to System 7 software. What recommended e-mail clients there are? What's the latest version of Photoshop that will run on 7.6? This category has been an integral part of S7T since its inception. Unfortunately, I feel it has outgrown its structure for a long time. Dan categorized software in four fields: Internet Productivity Multimedia Utilities After Knez and me took over, we've added the coding section. Space is crammed, but we're not exactly happy with the way the software is categorized. I do lack a good idea for how to categorize it differently, though. Someone with a good idea ? |

It's a though question to answer. Depends on what we want to do really. I would love to add more software, but it indeed feels cramped in it's current form.

Just one idea: Is there a way to capture lists of top downloaded System 7 software from the Macintosh Garden, perhaps sub-categorized by PPC vs 68k? Another thought: This is a good place to share experiences, testing, real world use. I really value a writeup that warns of instability on a particular system or version of the MacOS, or that gives a tip or two on running a particular app like memory allocation, extension conflicts, weird errors, etc.

IIRC fogwraith said that there is no tracking of downloads with the current version of the Mac Garden. I'm also somewhat undecided whether that would be a good thing. MS Word would be no. 1 for word processing due to its brand awareness, while I think WriteNow is probably the better alternative for 90% of System 7 users nowadays. (Not in case you plan on writing your dissertation on an old Power Mac though ;-) ) So while popular products are often superior, they are not necessarily. Which leads me to more of a subjective, but hand-picked approach by today's users of System 7. Does that make sense? As for sharing experiences, conflict reports and such you're spot on. This is the place. I encourage everyone to open up threads with their findings. See my StuffIt 5.5 & 7.6 thread :-) I'd add that to our software guide or help center if the author agrees and there is a public interest.

Ah,yes... agreed - I'm with you. The hand-picked approach is more interesting and more useful here.
