ClarisWorks (V4 and earlier) had a telecom module that used the Mac Communication ToolBox, which surfaced in System 6.0.5. The Communication Toolbox is also used by HyperCard, and OpenDoc.

In its default install it has ANSI/VT102 terminal emulation and xterm transfers. There were a variety of 3rd party add ons that added other terminal emulators and other transfer protocols.

Many of those add-ons can be found as part of HyperCard stacks, which were often created for use with telecom services. For example I connected to Compuserve for a long time using a HyperCard stack created just for that purpose.

I did get to Captain's Quarter II using telenet in Cyberdog. It had an ASCII art picture and a prompt to log in. I of course have not setup an account, so I got nowhere beyond the opening page. Do you need to create an account on the website?

As mentioned earlier, if you leave the username blank, it will take you through the process to create an account.

I love playing around with old terminal programs, so I'll have to check this one out.

It looks like you figured out how to sign on to the BBS.  And it's "P" in the forums to post a message. :)

I put a link in my Cyberdog Notebook for fast access. Always living in small rural towns, BBSes were not so much a thing in my experience. They were all dial-up and in my situation they were all a long distance call, and boy did Ma Bell like to charge for long distance.

So much of what was/is done on a BBS is stuff that I enjoy doing with people in person. I have never understood why someone would play a game by themselves on a computer. Music should definitely be shared with people at social occasions. Chat for me will always imply talking to someone near by, like in the same room. Heck I do not even see the phone as suitable for conversation, and that is the whole reason it exists.

For me a computer has always been something of an interactive book. You read, you take notes, then you put it down and go enjoy a real life.

What is "real" in life these days? I see grown ups rolling along on e-scooters, when they still have healthy legs to walk on. Yet the government wants to regulate our eating habits "to fight obesity".

I am flabbergasted by Facebook groups which are supposedly about part time work in exchange for temporary housing accommodations and nearly every posting there states "veganism" either as a pre-condition to apply or to be accepted. Why is everybody so concerned with the food I eat?

Don't get me started about gender-speak or cultural sensitivity issues:
I am confronted with sexually hyper-charged advertising all over the place, yet nothing is more "sensitive" now than talking about the oldest thing in the world. Well, at least when its supposed to happen between a man and a women.

And how do you identify a male from a female these days? Men with menstrual cramps and women with beards and sausage dangling between their legs make that distinction rather cumbersome.

Reality? I can not even watch the news w/o having to ask myself: "Did I already die and went to hell and nobody told me?"

I got no clue anymore about what is "real" and what is not. But I do know that engaging with other people over the Internet puts a heck of a lot more firewalls in between me and them then would normally be available when cramped in with strangers in places I am not familiar with.

So yeah, in old age I prefer chat rooms over billiard halls and Bulletin Board Systems over crowded football stadiums.

My son, his daughter and her teacher, had a parent, child, teacher conference. At the conference the teacher put up the child's record on the overhead projector so everyone could see what was being talked about.

Being just a general school record lot of information was put up, address, name, etc. One of the fields was Gender and it read:

"Gender  F"

Well to ensure some levity during the conference my granddaughter demanded to know why she got an "F" in gender and how was it even possible to fail "gender".

I remember filling out forms and Gender was often listed as Sex, to which of course we would fill it in with an "O", which for us either meant "often" or "occassionally".
