Yep, our classic Macs aside - what retro tech do you still use? I for one have a small yet nice collection of vinyls (but given the recent resurgence, is it really retro?). I also happen to drive a 20-year old BMW 3.16i which came with a tape deck! Yep, that's right - one of the last. I still have 2-3 tapes in my car that I pop into the player once every now and then. One of them being "In the Air tonight" from Phil Collins. Since my BMW has a convertible fabric roof that turns it into a wannabe cabrio, I put it into the deck and let it play on a night drive, kind of replicating that popular Miami Vice scene where Sonny drives through night-time 80's Miami. :-) We also have a bread-cutting machine from 1999 which still does the job. Cutters had to be replaced and one time my wife managed to cut the power cable instead bread (don't ask..) but nothing a little soldering couldn't fix. There's also small TV from circa 1996-97 with what could be a 17" screen? You guys remember, the type you'd have as a "second" TV in your kitchen / bedroom / kids room ? Still works and I can't really throw it away, but then it's standing on a shelf in my basement and waiting for a reason to be drawn out. Still works perfectly fine to this day! Nothing else comes to mind - what about you? |

Nice car ! I have a 1999 Volvo V70. If I find one of these old cigarette lighter/Power adapter one could buy for PowerBooks , I'll take a Pismo or a Wallstreet for a ride one day ![]() Other than that, I have an all metal fan, don't know how old it is. Doesn't have a single plastic pieces, cord is tissue covered and the power plug is ceramic. Very cool and in great condition. But had to find a transformer to it cause it runs on 110v.

I have a Creative Labs Nomad Jukebox mp3 player that I like using. I bought it a few years ago on a whim, and I love it. It's about the size of a stack of 3 CDs, has an actual spinning hard drive inside, and a variety of interesting features, including sound recording. The sound from it is very nice, but it goes through batteries at an obscene rate. A regular set of 4 AA batteries are dead after maybe 4 hours of play. A set of rechargeable AAs last a bit longer - thank goodness the AC adapter came with it ![]() I also have a 27" Zenith tube TV circa 1999- we use it for the old school game consoles we've accumulated (original Nintendo, Nintendo GameCube, and a cheap Atari 2600 knockoff).

I guess there's a lot of people here who are happy to use kit that does the job regardless of what society says we should use. We are not influenced by fashion or solutions to problems we don't have. Maybe we are also concerned about the environment, and appreciate Reduce and Reuse are more important than Recycle. Sometimes it's just fun! Personally I've always struggled to throw anything way unless it's broken AND I can't fix it. So my car, bike, hi-fi & video gear, are all from the 80s or 90s. And my shed and cupboards are chock full!

Wow! Some things never get old!! well, okay, the do, but they certainly age well (and outlive some of their owners) ![]() I use some old Victorinox EDCs that work exceedingly well for everyday tasks. Oh, and WebDAV, love my still-relevant age old tech, I guess along with MP3s, and so many formats still readable on old Mac and early Windows machines and emulators. I always ask the latest cloud providers to add it to their platforms and I've seen some do exactly that ![]() And books, well, that tech's old as sin, lol, almost anyways. Some things are just perfect just the way they were gotta unplug sometimes and just sit and read, you know? Especially before the upcoming generations say, a book? What's that??

Scouter - I nearly bought a Zen Touch, but the Nomad became available at a rock-bottom price just at the right time. Creative made some neat little devices, but the iPod buried them all. cballero, I've read my share of e-books, but I love physical books. My house is full of them. I buy most of mine second-hand - I'm always surprised what I can find. So, here's a controversial one for this topic: CDs. Old tech? Older? Middle-aged? Personally, I've created a nice library of music (especially classical) by scooping up armfuls of second-hand CDs in shops. I rip them to MP3s using XLD for Mac OS X, or a newer version of iTunes.

Damn, it's really too much stuff to list, but I will try .Computers that get daily usage: 1997 PowerMac 5500 2001 PowerBook G4 Titanium Computers seeing at least some weekly usage: 1992 Amiga 600 1992 Atari Falcon 1989 Macintosh SE/30 1999 SGI Octane 2002 PowerMac G4 "MDD" 2005 SGI Fuel Got a studio full of retro gear that gets frequent usage as well. And my 1959 Swedish made Mustang 616 moped and my 1980 Ford Capri "summer daily driver" gets some use as well

Definitely big on LPs and cassette tapes. My turntable is from 1979, and my receiver is from 1983. Have a Fluke multimeter from about 1982. The rest of it is 80s/90s outboard gear. I'm still looking to add an Atari and get Notator/Creator. That would be incredible to have but the prices for them over here in the USA are kind of steep.
