Know wiby.org?

Chances are, you haven't heard about it. Like me. Actually, I only got to know it while testing out the Sherlock Plugins. It's a Google-like search engine that... aw, well, let them speak for themselves

Quote
In the early days of the web, pages were made primarily by hobbyists, academics, and computer savvy people about subjects they were personally interested in. Later on, the web became saturated with commercial pages that overcrowded everything else.

All the personalized websites are hidden among a pile of commercial pages. Google isn't great at finding them, its focus is on finding answers to technical questions, and it works well; but finding things you didn't know you wanted to know, which was the real joy of web surfing, no longer happens.

In addition, many pages today are created using bloated scripts that add slick cosmetic features in order to mask the lack of content available on them. Those pages contribute to the blandness of today's web.

The Wiby search engine is building a web of pages as it was in the earlier days of the internet. In addition, Wiby helps vintage computers to continue browsing the web, as pages indexed are more suitable for their performance.

I really like this project and thought I'd share it with you. Let's spread the word, this is effectively a search engine I know many of us had been hoping for and besides, it strives to be as retro compatible as possible. (yes, you can use it from System 7 Macs too)

The "surprise me" feature is especially cool! I now know about the de Havilland series of planes and that even IBM users had "early days of fun computer stuff"...

First Frog Jump, now this!

Classic Mac is back, baby!! :D

The in-roads are being built for retro computing to make a big splash online again. Thank you for dropping this fabulous new gem :)

Haha, I really start to love this thing. This comes closest to the original late 90's web experience for me!

Had a super fun evening yesterday browsing and learning about stuff "that I didn't know I wanted to know". Found a page of a Canadian nuclear physicist with a wealth of info on the subject. Later found a page with news about various space programs and its history.

If I compare the 2 hours spent there and actually learning something new vs. the mindless chatter and constant self-portrayal in social media, this was a relaxing and rewarding experience. It totally reminded me of the original mission of the internet and what we thought it'd become (before corporates, lawyers, political agitators and seriously disturbed people took over ...)

Best of all - I was 2 hours on the net and nobody tried to sell me anything. Didn't have that for a loooong time :-D

Seriously, everyone try it out. Grab a beer (or other beverage of your liking), sit down on your vintage Mac and hit that "surprise me" button on wiby.org.
