Does anybody else still use Deneba Systems graphics packages: UltraPaint & artWORKS? Or Aldus SuperPaint? Or any other 1-bit graphics apps? I'm interested to hear from anybody else stil doing 1-bit art on Macintosh. |

Graphics and paint is not really my cup of tea, just wanted to chime in that there's MacPaint as well for 1bit systems.

Well, I loved using Aldus SuperPaint 3 on original 68k Macs

There are dozens upon dozens of 1-bit capable drawing apps. It's quite amazing. Some are more limited than others. The best are unbeatable, even today. Personally, I prefer those apps which support layers, like UltraPaint or artWorks. SuperPaint is a little more limited in its approach. I know some people who only use MacPaint, or even HyperCard.

Yeah, I used to edit files in SuperPaint, then dump the results into Photoshop, but it would have been much better to have layers in the original program. I may play around in the other two programs you mentioned though.

Interesting topic! I love and loved Studio/1. I always found that one the most comfortable to use for me and supporting the widest array of formats, at least back then. I heard it was also quite kick-ass with sprite animations, but I actually never got around trying that. But Studio/1 stuck with me since then. Does anyone of you guys still pixel stuff like in the old days? You know, like sitting down on your Mac with just a drink and an idea? Not because someone pays you for doing it, but because the Mac would empower you to be creative? Maybe it's just me but that seems like a lost art. Dang, I need to sit down and pixel some 1-bit scenery again. Love those 1-bit images. Unfortunate I can't find my old works, had quite a collection of 1-bit and 8-bit art. If any of you do still pixel, please share your works with us here :-)

Yes, I still do that! Although my setup is with System 7 in a Mac emulator on an iPad Pro 12.9" with Apple Pencil. You can see a thread of my last work here: https://twitter.com/gingerbeardman/status/1375461169461334020?s=21 Single image: http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/04/09/ExaemFzWEAglNWw.jpeg Since then I have moved from Mini vMac to BasiliskII, removing some limitations and making things a bit easier. Studio/1 is pretty good, I need to spend more time with that. Though I am spoiled with layer support in UltraPaint/artWORKS. Classic Macintosh apps on System 7 can't be beaten for 1-bit art.

What an inspiring creation, GBM! ![]() People need to stop referring to System 7 as tech past its prime it works, plain and simple, and your retooling of it using tablets is simply genius!Seeing retro-innovation at its finest is what this is all about, rediscovering your passions with a platform that truly gave birth to personal computing. It's pure and at the source. Man, you just inspired me in a big way; I love it!

Thanks! and I'm happy to have inspired you. I'm looking for a boxed copy of artWORKS (and UltraPaint, and Canvas 3.0) if anybody knows one for sale?

Wow, that's truly awesome! Just a pity it's on that cutting board and not a real Macintosh ;-) Please feel free to share more of your works with us! Like I said, i need to sit down on the weekend and pixel something myself. I don't think I'll get near your level of awesomeness but then the idea is just to be creative again :-) Note: I felt free to upload your pic on the Mac Garden Image uploader so folks can view it on their System 7 machines. Our forums is all about being open to everyone, despite support for https :-) @cballero - your comment about System 7 made my day, thanks! "it works, plain and simple" - that's so very true! Just because it wasn't made yesterday doesn't mean it can be useful anymore.

I'm all about System 7, the host device is largely irrelevant. So I'd rather run it on a modern portable device with all the trimmings, than my Macintosh Classic with Wacom ArtPad. I appreciate you mirroring my image, but there was no need to trash my twitter link. One image is not a good replacement for a whole discussion thread. Good software never gets old. I think of it like The Beatles, they're old and no longer exist, but also timeless.

I've always seen the Mac OS as the soul of the Mac, the essence and the machines then are the bodies. I can hear Marvin Gaye's famous line playing in my head, "ain't nothing like the real thing, baby", which is true. It's the Mac feel. The designs became classics, especially the small compacts, the entire Powerbook line and then the iMacs, ibooks, cubes and finally the Minis: all originals! I know that's what you mean, Bol ![]() But then the joy I have of running a the Classic OS is revived in my mobile devices and my tiny Chrome subnotebook can't be matched. It's like the Mac OS was truly designed for these new machines, breathing the Mac soul into them. Maybe I'm overemphasizing the feeling, but I don't believe so, so I get exactly what you mean, GBM because I get the same exact feeling!Would I drool running the Classic Mac OS on the fastest Classic Macs again? You better believe it! Do I have some? You bet I do! Do I equally enjoy being able 'free' myself from Apple's older hardware and use the OS anywhere I can? Oh heck yeah, lol! In the end, I think the Apple revolution was in the OS, which is why they nixxed the clone wars back with Mac OS 8 and that was a very smart idea. No need to compete with MS with the myriad of hardware manufacturers when you can do it all in-house and in a way, we're both grass-roots and the next-generation clones

First off, I'm sorry for omitting the twitter link during editing, this wasnt my intention. I just saw that link i couldn't open (browsing with iCab and my 8600 at the time) and booted the Mac Pro to fix it in a hurry where i replaced it. My bad, gingerbeardman! More generally speaking, Knezzen and me go to great length to keep at least this place on the internet as compatible as possible. S7T is meant to be a place about and for use with your System 7 Mac. https links are OK but please mark them with something like (modern browser needed). Worst case it'll stall your old Netscape after clicking while it chokes on the modern JavaScript. As for the "OS is king", i totally respect that. Personally, Apple has always been special to me because of the combination of dedicated hardware and software. It's such an integral part of the experience for me. That's probably why software emulators are rather boring for me - they do display the same thing and yet they don't. This is not necessarily rational but an emotional choice (and certainly highly nostalgic too). But now we've strayed away from the topic, so let's get back to 1-bit graphics. With modern hard- and software and millions of colours at your hands, what makes you pick 1-bit graphics for your work? Do you do graphics design professionally?

I feel that 1-bit graphics give his artwork a 'black-and-white' photo quality to them. And they render perfectly in all Macs even the 1-bit monitor compact Macs. Those two things come to mind when he chose to work on those. I used to study martial arts for a brief moment, and there was an impressive beauty to their calligraphy techniques. I did do calligraphy, both old English and more modern styles, so Japanese Writing and art has always held a special place in my heart. Lol, now I'm getting nostalgic talking about the subject.
