.... and making the fastest System 7ish PowerBook G3 Lombard

Today I started getting rid of the platinum interface in Mac OS 8.6 first by skinning it as System 7 then by using a rubber band wallpaper why rubber bands you ask well why not from what I know rubber bands were very popular during the 90’s heck we even had shoes that had holes in them and looked like rubber band shoes (can’t remember the name though as I wasn’t born back then) due to different color variations next I got rid of all the after-1996 software why not ‘97-98 because that’s the hated platinum era of os8 put in a 64GB  m.2 SATA SSD (thanks sfpratt1954) next things to do are as follows

1. Get a working battery pack somewhere on the web
2. Change the about this computer to resemble the System 7.6.1 about this computer box including Picasso artwork
3. Get rid of the startup box that says Mac OS 8.6 and replace it with the one from 7.5-7.5.3
4.get rid (or at least hide) all of the os8 applications that are not needed including the appearance manager
5. Get the original system 7 application menu back
Get rid of Sherlock or at least hide it as it’s main feature (unless system 7 today has a plug-in for its site forums)  internet searching on different search engines which is long gone
6.get wireless networking with a Ethernet to WiFi adapter
Also bolksonj I tried viewing the website on Netscape 1.0 and I got this :( http://images.macintosh.garden/2021/03/24/2113DB8E-01FC-4A0A-B445-526D29B0BAFF.jpeg

wow, someone is going through a lot of trouble to get a System 7 Mac! ;-)

Well, I salute your efforts! I've always loved the clean System 7 look and prefered i way over 3D folders and platinum looks. I wonder how far you'll be able to get.

A sherlock plug-in to search the forums? Hmm... might be an interesting side-project to write one. I have Apple's doc for creating Sherlock plugins here. Anyone interested in a small side-project? What about you, snes?

And yes, System 7 Today hasn't been tested with Netscape 1.0 and isn't likely to work. Very few pages will work with Netscape 1.0 - you'll want to use at least Netscape 4, though Mac OS 8.6 gives you Classilla and that's awesome.

Chin up! We've all been there, kid :)

When things go south, I always try to see it as opportunities like you did. And no worries, of course we're happy to assist with your System 7 look-and-feel project, so here's my two cents on it. thankfully, you did most of the GUI heavy-lifting w/the System 7 theme: ;)

And the processor alone will make your modest System 7 apps scream speedwise, so you actually did yourself a favor, especially since it can handle more precious RAM!

1. I believe Find Pro III works on Mac OS 8.6, so that should take care of Sherlock; and it's from the creator of the original System 7 Find File, so it's a solid find utility gem :D (another option is to trash sherlock altogether because you don't need it: doing a search is as easy as typing Command-F) having said that FPIII is really what the find tool Apple should have added all along and it's very speedy too!

2. Classila is actually skinnable, so as far as getting the right look, you may want to revisit that browser. It is way smoother for online activities and since the goal is to get the right look, it being Classila should not affect your choice.

3. The way to get the application menu to stop doing the modern-style tear-off menu is to open your extensions folder and remove an extension called Application Switcher. Once you dump it and reboot, it will work like the old menu :) the only thing that will remain is that little sliding divider to iconize the folder (just don't touch it, lol)

4. Resedit should get the first customizations on your list done, you just need a Mac OS 7 Finder and System File to philfer the image resources you need.

5. Another trick that may help your project out is to use the extensions manager to turn off all except your Base Mac OS 8 resources, then start adding things back as needed, like your Internet access items. You'd be surprised how many things you simply don't need running :o just resist the urge to trash the disabled items; give it some time in the event you disabled something you may actually use later. If you can't resist, then consider moving these items to another spot, folder-and-all if you wish, so your can grab something and toss it back in your System Folder if you need it later ;)

With a little work and some careful tweaking and pruning, you'll find yourself in System 7 heaven in no time, booyah! :D

Yeah, I would be interested in that too. Actually, this would make an interesting tutorial on the page "How to System 7-ize your Mac OS 8 / 9 install" ;-)

@snes - make sure to keep a backup of the files before poking with them in ResEdit. I've learned it the hard way years ago.

This might be fun to try on OS 9. I might throw a second system folder on my iBook to mess around with. :)

SNES, here is a link to a site that talks about Resedit hacks for every Classic Mac OS :D and the site works in System 7, too! Pretty cool, right?

http://www.joyofmacs.com/finderhacks/index.html

Then the startup image can be copied from the System 7 Finder by opening the PICT resources in Resedit and replacing them in Mac OS 8.6 :)

Edit: okay, the ATM logo is found in the System 'suitcase' file (if you look at the file itself you see that it's a little briefcase because it has/can have system stuff in it, lol) open it w/Resedit, the ATM logo is found in CICN #-16396 resource (you'll recognize the logo once you open the resource) :)

wow, awesome find, cballero. That page is a treasure. I'll have to add it to our list of "pages that work with System 7" :)

Well, with the skins available, just look for one that gives you a minimized look-and-feel. Here's the theme backups:

Very true, but that's how all web browsers were configured back then. Internet Explorer came out with very interesting web browsers even a very OS X-looking one. Netscape, which is where Mozilla is derived from, also went through several 'looks'. And both iCab and Opera distinguished themselves in their appearance as well.

In the end, pretty much none of them adhered to a System 7 look in any way, shape or form. So my suggestion was to simply pick a theme that best suits the look you'd like from its various themes, since in all of the examples given above, none if the precursor web browsers had any similarity to each other nor System 7 for that matter, so trying to make Clasilla fit a mold, well, it's a mold you're creating, not one that existed back when the World-Wide-Web was what it was: a wild, untamed kid ready to amaze the world with cool and unique appearances and the latest web technologies of it's time.

Boy, that was a long sentence, lol! :D
