Before we get into this, I need to admit that I got online in ca. 1997 for the first time. That means, I have zero first-hand experience dabbling with MacTCP, Nubus Ethernet cards, networks etc. on older Macs. I do have a IIci that is near and dear to me because it's the computer my younger self always longed for (dad brought home a LC instead). For some time now I've tried to get this IIci online, alas to no avail. I've just received my second Nubus ethernet card, an Asanté MC3NB. System 7 Today member fogwraith had graciously given me his (untested) 3com Etherlink/NB one. I can't get neither to work and I find it particularly difficult to debug the issue, so I'm hoping for some help. I've installed the drivers for both, obtained from the Mac Garden. (no, just running one at the same time) I've updated my 7.1 installation to 7.5 for now and installed Open Transport 1.3. Neither setting the DHCP to auto nor filling in the values manually helped. Booted System 6.0.7 and tried to set up things with MacTCP but it wouldn't work either. (well, MacTCP always had this reputation to be extremely finicky) Can't get it to connect to my local network either, when changing the "Printer Port" in the AppleTalk Control Panel to "Alternate Ethernet" it'll just throw a rather generic error. Here's the thing - what did folks use to debug such setups back in the day? Is there any software that could at least point me into the direction? I just have zero idea if the hardware (card) is broken, the drivers are wrong or whatever else causing the trouble. At my wit's end and appreciate any ideas, insights, tips. |

I don't know if this will provide exactly what you're looking for, but Action Retro recently did a video on something similar to what you're trying to do. Might be worth looking in to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cj98AnFhVXk Otherwise, maybe it would be possible to share a network connection over serial? This DIY system of LocalTalk-ish adapters might also be of interest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krbjyLcZRz0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZwNQLrXv-A Hopefully some of this helps, best of luck!

Just a couple of (hopefully helpful) ideas: a. try putting OT 1.3.1 on System 7 Pro. That OS is lighter in resources but can handle the (patched) latest 68k Open Transport for a combination of speed and compatibility, especially if you don't have a lot of RAM installed on it. The patched files are in the Garden of course ![]() https://macintoshgarden.org/apps/open-transport-131-update-open-transport-13-68k b. use the same patched OT 1.3.1 extensions on Mac OS 7.6.1. This is the last officially supported OS for a IIci, and as long as you have enough RAM, it should run fairly well on it. I always try to have my OS as updated as possible, especially when doing things like going online usually it gives me less headaches!Of course, OT may or may not be compatible with the cards you are trying to use, so I hope that if not these ideas, something else may work on your IIci I still remember the IIci I used very fondly; I coded my first website on it
