Woah there! Why not start different threads for all of these questions? It can help us answer all of your questions.

But...
Word 5.0 is the bomb.

I second that Word 5.1a is excellent. Word 4 was a terrific Mac WP, but with version 5.1a, Word came a very useful toolbar that gives users easy-to-tools as buttons for just about every one of Word's commands. The best part was that these toolbar buttons are configurable to whatever you want on them and there is even an option to make our own buttons. A very cool freeware add-on that was featured in places like America Online, Prodigy and other online services also colorizes this toolbar!

An additional add-on give you the option to read newer versions of the Word .doc document format used in Word 6 up to Word 2001. The .docx format was a much newer format introduced in Mac OS X and the only add-on available to (somewhat) convert that format to .doc format, but that stand-alone conversion tool only runs on PPC Macs and possibly only OS 9 I think? It's been a minute, but I'm pretty sure that I covered that these tools here in the forums before :)

Word 5.1a was the version I grew up with, and I seem to only recall good things about it (though as a kid, I was confused by many of the buttons...)

Some people have negative feelings about 6. Perhaps it may be that it was disappointing on its original release, but in retrospect may not actually have been that bad?

The MG page for Word 6 has several complaints, but they don't go much into specifics at a glance, except to say that perhaps the UI is less desirable? Someone with more experience I'm sure can comment.

This might shed a little more light on the subject:

The so-called Word 6 debacle was due to Microsoft aligning both of their OS versions of their Office 4.2.1 suites in both function, appearance and version numbers. Prior this version of MS Office, the Mac versions enjoyed their own look-and-feel and features unique to itself. Version 4.2.1 was subsequently the only version of Office to combine both the release dates and version numbers of their Office Suite.

What made matters worse was that because the code that built both Suites was the same Windows-based code, the Windows version was fully optimized for their own operating system Windows while the Mac version did not benefit from those or any OS optimizations, so it was much slower in comparison.

I say all that to say that millions of Mac users made their voice heard at Redmond, Microsoft's headquarters, very loud and clear. They wanted their own software development to be kept separate from their Windows counterparts so it could be optimized for Macs and the Mac OS, not Windows!

The good thing about using MS Office has always been that it offers perfect compatibility between its Mac and Windows versions, which makes sending or sharing files between Macs and PCs much easier. The only downside is the change of document formats as new versions are released.

For most Mac users, the only benefit that Word 6 offered was nothing more than a more unified Windows-styled GUI environment for offices that used both Macs and PCs, a few minor updates to their correction tools and claims that it was slightly more compatible with PPC-based Macs, which didn't affect most users so they gladly skipped it. In fact, Word 5 continued to work amazingly well on PPC Macs due to it's greatly optimized and efficient code.

The next PPC-only release of Microsoft Office 98 was celebrated by many Mac users worldwide and was a huge success for Microsoft, so they continued to release their Mac versions a year following their Windows versions.

Word 5.1a is very fast, it takes up less disk space and has a lower memory footprint compared to Word 6. Having said this, if you have a fast enough Mac with plenty of disk space and lots of RAM, the speed improvement of Word 5.1a may not be as big a deal, but on all but the fastest 68k (and surprisingly early PPC) Macs and Powerbooks with modest disk space and RAM specs, Word 5.1a will run noticeably snappier compared to 6 and won't hog as much of your Mac's resources.

Hope this very brief rundown helps :)

I use Word 5.1a on my 68K Macs and I love it!  Only issue I have with it is that on 7.5.5 the installer freezes halfway through.  If I know I want to use 7.5.5 on a Mac, I either install Word 5.1 before updating to 7.5.5 or I copy over a Word 5.1 installation from one of my other Macs.

Wow, I never knew the installer did that! :o

I suppose as a workaround you could also bless a different System 7 folder/version for the install.
