Just recently I discovered the website http://www.theoldnet.com - this website lets you browse archived websites ala archive.org's the Wayback machine, but lets you do so on old browsers. One of the best parts of that site though is its wikipedia proxy. T hat helps a whole lot! I'm rocking Netscape Communicator 4.8. Which browsers are you guys using? But on topic: we are finding solutions to web browsing on old systems like The Old Net, but what about Email? The SSL security that modern email services require won't let us send and receive email from old clients. My workaround idea was to maybe get a dedicated server and somehow turn off all of the security so that old clients will work again, but I don't know if that is feasible. Do you guys have any other solution? |

I'm using a combination of browsers, but mainly Opera 5.0 and iCab 2.9.9 on my main 7.6.1 machine (PowerMac 5500 with a Sonnet 400mhz G3 upgrade). Interesting that you mentioned the email thing. We actually have such a service up and running! See this page for more info ![]() http://system7today.com/email-on-system7

DUDE IT WORKS! YES!! It was only a week ago that I posted a thread about this very issue over at 68kmla, and my call was heard! I'm using the Netscape email and it works fine. I put mail.macintoshgarden.org as both the incoming and outgoing server. Is that correct?

When I type out a long email, Netscape's Email composer seems to enter a bunch of breaklines. I don't mean as I'm composing an email, I mean when I send it to someone else or another email address of mine or take a look at it on my phone in my Sent box on Gmail.

Must be Netscape doing something dirty then. The service is only a relay. We don’t tough any of the content, so nothing gets added or removed by the server.

Has anyone tried Eudora, not sure which version would be applicable. It is still my email client of choice on an OSX 10.6 mac , though really dated.

In the days of locked-down devices and T2 security chips, "dated" suddenly becomes a seal of quality for software :-) I haven't tried Eudora on anything OSX, but I did on System 7. Mostly because I wanted to understand why so many people obviously loved it so much. I think it was version 3 or 4 - and upon installation wanted to force Appearance Manager on me. No, thank you - here's a free trip to the trashcan. Bummer, I'd really like to know what set it apart from Claris Emailer, Outlook & others.

Mac applications especially in the System 7 era were typically engineered to do one task, do the task simply and efficiently. This resulted in power users often saying that Macs were just toys. I think Eudora was an answer to that, bringing as much complexity to email as could be brought to bear. In fairness, it was a very comprehensive package, a real master of the mbox. It strongest and perhaps most enduring feature was its ability to archive, sort and maintain very large collects of email (tens of thousands of messages. Rule could be created to deal with spam and sort emails into folders, signatures could be automated to have specific signatures assigned to specific reciepients. Personally I never had need for such and found Claris eMailer a delightful program. bill

Interesting! So that could explain the "affection" of certains users toward Eudora. Certainly, some of the mentioned features are useful for certain professions. But like you I adore Claris E-Mailer (for the simplicity and ease of use)

I still use Eudora on a mac running osx10.6. As mentioned above, it has wonderful filtering capabilities. Here is the feature I found indispensible. 1. Using filters to send emails to specific mail boxes is easy. 2. When there is new mail in one of these mail boxes, it will open in a separate window. This happens when you check mail. 3. Here is the goodness ... It only happens when there is a new email receved. This means you can be subscribed to a list server sending you hundresd of emails per day. You can scan the emails in the mail box window and open the ones you are interested in, leaving the rest as an archive. Next time you check mail, if there are no new emails to that mail box, that window will NOT automatically open, even though you may have thousands of unopened emails in the mail box. So, the Eudora default, in every mail box, is to only open the mail box window if there is new mail. It is an email management godsend that I have not been able to duplicate.
