You just have to admire people for the stuff they put websites up for ![]() http://www.publicstairs.com/ "Welcome to PublicStairs.com, the web site devoted to the discovery and documentation of major outdoor public stairways anywhere in the world." Quote from: from the page While running along Lake Washington in Seattle I ran past the newly rebuilt Jackson Stairway. The number of stairs has been reduced from 140 to 135, but the new stairway is very nice. Check it out if you are in the neighborhood. And I thought I was nerdy! :-D |

It sure uses CSS for layout and comes with Google tracking code and a jQuery dependency. While that might not break functionally, it's likely to lock up old browsers if they haven't JavaScript deactivated beforehand. Besides, getting your browser agent is like three lines PHP, but then I know there's tons of "How old are you?" pages on the web that make good ad revenue, so ...

I just got around to visiting publicstairs.com. What a wonderful website. Friends refer to me as a "walking machine". It is always a real delight to stumble across public stairs and maintained trails when out wandering around. I lived in Minot, ND USA for many years. It consisted of down town, North Hill and South Hill. I lived on South Hill and school was located down town. Several coulees connected the hills to the valley, and a couple of them had nice public stairs. In all of the hundreds of times I went up and down those steps I do not recall ever seeing anyone. I was always intrigued by who maintained them. They were always in good shape and in the winter they did get shoveled. The USA seems to have turned very anti-pedestrian and it has become increasingly odd find places designed for walkers. I asked town manager of the town I live in now, why the walkways in the park are not shoveled in the winter. He said, "Nobody goes in the parks in the winer." That is something of a double edged sword, if the walkways are under a meter of snow that is not cleared away, it is not really feasible to walk in the park. When out walking parks and such generally offer nice short cuts from one place to another. I kind of think of walking as "retro transportation" and it is nice in similar ways to "retro-computing".

Colorado can be a real mixed bag. It is very pedestrian friendly in towns. Pedestrians always have the right of way and fines for not yielding to pedestrians are very steep. Generally the minute you step off the curb or go onto the shoulder of the road, traffic will just stop for you. Many of the mountains have been purchased by private parties, who have posted them with no trespassing signs. So in that sense, Colorado is full of nobels and peasants and the peasants can only go where the nobles say.

For someone like me living in Central Europe, it strikes me as an odd thought that things could be different somewhere else! Because what you describe is just the normal here. We do a lot of walking by foot by comparison. Helps keeping the fat off. But that's also because our walking distances are small. In just 5 minute walking distance I have a supermarket, a pharmacy, a small clothing store and a bakery. And I live in a small town on the countryside! I never understood the appeal of "owning" your personal mountain, lake, whatever. In that regard I really like the Swedish "Allemansrätten", which is basically a law allowing everybody to visit all the land - even if it is owned by somebody else. As long as you behave! But I consider it very beneficial for society.

Strange that the US, the land of capital-F Freedom, with all the mythology of the open West, has no 'Right to Roam'. But property rights are so central to the culture, that they trump this freedom. I wonder whether it's in the separate states power to enact such a law. Sweden has a reasonable compromise whereby you can camp out anywhere, if you are out of sight and sound of the nearest dwelling. As long as you clean up after yourself.

I am a huge fan of private property laws and a staunch supporter of every hillbilly guarding his spread with a double barreled peacemaker. People are pigs and routinly don't give a damn about other people's rights. And that goes tripple for well to do suburbanites descending on unsuspecting country folk like locust on ancient Egypt. I know, because I once was one of those land owning victims of weekend ATV terrorism. And I therefore wouldn't buy a molehill in a country where I am not allowed to erect a decent fence around it.
