Hey community,

looking into my options in regards to adding sound input capabilities to my Power Mac 8600 running 7.6. I want to be able to record my voice. It doesn't need to be professional level audio but I wonder what my options are.

I still have an old "spermium" microphone that works with my LC but doesn't work on the 8600. What was considered cool stuff back in the day?

Any suggestions as to what is still available and doesn't cost a fortune??

I would personally recommend a capture card or at least a personality card. I believe that some of those can record audio.

Thanks! I've been thinking about that too but then remember the 8600 has built-in AV capabilities. Maybe I should rephrase my question then:

Does anyone know if there were any Mac-specific third party microphone products for the beige Macs?

Besides, any simple 3,5mm plug microphone should work, should it?

While I was rummaging through the basement last weekend I discovered our old family Panasonic Camcorder. I think I'll hook it up and try it out. Since it has a micro too, that might do the job for me. That's part of the fun dealing with System 7 - tinkering and looking for solutions :-)

I would definitely try the Panasonic. I'm not the one to ask about microphones however. I've had normal 3.5mm microphones work fine in capture cards under system 7.

To update this one, I'm still looking for a solution. I bought a cheap 10 euro Speedlink CAPO Desk & Hand Microphone but it isn't recognized on my 8600 (and neither on the MDD). I'd really love to tape some tutorials for Cornica.

I got this stereo adapter as a gift. Had no idea what to do with it but I guess it goes both ways? Does that mean I could plug a mic in and get at least mono sound?

Such a dummy when it comes to audio stuff ;-)

Apple had their own PlainTalk microphones(?), that worked with the front microphone input. If I remember correctly the PlainTalk mics had a pin that supplied voltage to the mic. You should be able to rig up an adapter (something or the other to RCA) and hook it up to the A/V ports on the back of the 8600. I have no clear recollection as to what software could be used to capture that input.

The 8600 doesn't have a true microphone input port, so a standard microphone is not going to work on its own.
The port is actually a line-level audio input (higher voltages).
The Apple PlainTalk microphone has a built-in amplifier to boost the signal to line-level.

This Mac also has handy audio/video in/out RCA/Phono sockets.
Your camcorder probably has RCA audio-out sockets, so I would connect them to the RCA audio-in sockets on the Mac.
Your adapter is just a physical converter from RCA (which most Macs don't have) to 3.5mm jack (which most do).

If you want to use a standard microphone, your camcorder probably has a socket for one. Almost any cassette deck could be used instead of the camcorder too.
