My Performa 6200CD has a bad habit of "hard freezing" randomly, most of the time when downloading a file, sometimes when extracting a file, or sometimes when loading a game. It will lock up, and will respond to nothing except Ctrl-Command-Power. I downgraded from Mac OS 8.1 to System 7.6.1 and it still does this. Is there any way to diagnose the problem?

I would check the RAM sticks, the PRAM battery, maybe the hard drive... Do you have an extension card?

If none of this works, it may be a problem with the motherboard.

You need to check the rams, and the HDD, if you using built in memory from the HDD, and the HDD is wrong that is the problem.

Another idea - is there a chance that this machine may not have been repaired during the big Performa recall back in the 90's? Back in the day a lot of Performas shipped with buggy ROMs which caused a few issues, and I seem to recall that one of the symptoms of the buggy Performa ROMs was freezing. It might not be a bad idea to run the 5xxx/6xxx tester (on any Mac OS CD from 7.6 onwards) just in case.
