Hello my friends :-) I'm new on this forum For about 20 years, I played with my dads Macintosh IIcx. After 20 years of upgrading my Macs form Quicksilver, G5 an Mac mini C2D, I would like to reinvent System 7 in my household ;-) I have a couple of questions about Hard and Software. 1. Is the Quadra 840AV the fastest 68k available? 2. Is it a silent Mac? If no, is it possible to make him silent? 3. What component should I use to speedup the Mac? a) How much RAM can I put in the Mac? b) Wich ist the fastest available HD for that kind of Mac? SSD? c) Other things to speed it up? CPU upgrade excluded 4. Is it possible to connect the Mac to the web? On a Router? Ethernet? 5. Is there somewhere a list of all 68K software on the web? 6. Will it ever be possible to run Classilla on a 68K System 7.1 Mac? I would like to run 7.1 because I heard it is the fastest OS on 68K Mac an rock solid :-) Thanks in advance MacNostalgic |

Quote from: "MacNostalgic" 1. Is the Quadra 840AV the fastest 68k available? Without an upgrade yes, and I don't think there ever was a 68k upgrade for the Quadra 840av. There was a rumored 68060 being developed by Sonnet or Daystar or somebody but it never made it out. I think I read that Apple pressured the developers to kill it in lieu of PowerPC upgrades. Quote from: "MacNostalgic" 2. Is it a silent Mac? If no, is it possible to make him silent? No, and not unless you can find ultra-quiet fans to replace the Quadra's standard ones and a quiet SCSI hard drive as well. Quote from: "MacNostalgic" 3. What component should I use to speedup the Mac? Memory, faster and larger hard drive, late-model NuBus video card. Quote from: "MacNostalgic" a) How much RAM can I put in the Mac? 128 MB according to http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_quadra/stats/mac_quadra_840av.html Quote from: "MacNostalgic" b) Wich ist the fastest available HD for that kind of Mac? SSD? If you can find a SCSI SSD then maybe that, not sure if that would be faster than any of the fairly common 10,000 RPM SCSI drives. I have a few myself. They require an adapter but work amazingly. Quote from: "MacNostalgic" c) Other things to speed it up? CPU upgrade excluded There are also 100Base-T ethernet NuBus cards which are super rare but they're out there. Quote from: "MacNostalgic" 4. Is it possible to connect the Mac to the web? On a Router? Ethernet? Oh yes, all of that is very common since they existed during the early Internet. Your Quadra already has ethernet built in the form of AAUI. You simply need an AAU transceiver like this: http://www.kpsurplus.com/farallon-etherwave-aaui-transceiver-green.html Quote from: "MacNostalgic" 5. Is there somewhere a list of all 68K software on the web? Many, many places, but you might try looking here first: http://main.system7today.com/softwareindex/internet.html for a great collection of the latest System 7 software, much of which will run on 68k systems just fine. Quote from: "MacNostalgic" 6. Will it ever be possible to run Classilla on a 68K System 7.1 Mac? Absolutely not. And with such a powerful system I'd go with 7.6.1 for sure. Quote from: "MacNostalgic" I would like to run 7.1 because I heard it is the fastest OS on 68K Mac an rock solid :-) Well, technically the fastest yes but in reality no not all that much faster than 7.6.1 except for perhaps boot time. The rock solid bit is debatable, plus it'll be quite limiting software-wise. Thanks in advance MacNostalgic
