Video card - I was looking at the suggested ebay nubus radeon card for the guy with the 6116.  Will that also work with a 6290 I just bought?   My 6290 has an unused pds slot .. little confused on if nubus is the same as pds.  As I understand, a video card in the pds slot would then over-ride the soldered on video ram that is standard in this model.  The video card page here at the website is a little vague on which described cards have what kind of connectivity.

ethernet ... any tips on an ethernet card with rj45 that will work on the comm slot on the 6290?  I figure I'll pull out the modem card that's in that slot now.

thx

The x2xx series of PowerMacs are essentially Quadra 630 series macnines with a built in PPC upgrade. The PDS slot you refer to is the common LC PDS and it can use any of the LC PDS cards. It has no Nubus or PCI slots and that will very much limit your choice of video upgrades.

The comm slot modem can be replaced with a comm slot ethernet card, or you can perhaps more easily find an ethernet card for the LC PDS slot.

Thanks for the tips on this project.  I need to get a cd burner happening with this machine too.  I just bought a mint copy of retail Toast 4 to use.  Any suggestions for an internal scsi burner to replace the cd-rom drive with?  Or should I look for some sort of external scsi enclosure and burner instead and just keep the cd rom drive inside where it is ?

Apple was pretty particular about what it could boot from on that vintage machine. If the CD ROM does not have Apple ROMs it will be all but impossible to boot the machine from the drive, so I would recommend you use an external drive.

HP and Yamaha both made SCSI CDRWs which worked very will the Mac using Toast. I still have my old Yamaha SCSI burner in an external case and it has worked reliably for a decade or better. Toast 4 works very well with OS 7.6.
