Hi all, there used to be a system extension called "720K Floppy Disk Formatter" which enabled Power Mac users (because of the floppy drives provided for them) to format 800K disks using the 720K disk format used by IBM PCs. The Mac would then create a HFS filesystem for it. This extension was provided in System 7.1 Pro Update, but was then abruptly discontinued by the time System 7.2 came around. The extension not available for 68K Macs. Does anyone have this extension? I had it at one point, but the disk I saved it on died on me, and lost the only copy I had. Apple no longer distribute the extension, and I can't for the life of me find it anywhere on the 'Net. Any help in this regard would be hugely appreciated! Thanks! --tonza |

I am afraid, I never heard of that extension. Could it be that you are looking for System7 Pro 7.1.1 ? Such files can be found on the Apple Legacy Software Recovery CD, hosted at Macintoshgarden. Best wishes!

You will be aware of the fact, that you usually can initialize all kinds of disks, 1,4MB Mac and PC, Mac 800k and PC 720k with a Mac floppy drive. This procedure was common with Systems 7.5 to 9.0 at least. If you don't have many 2DD disks any more, a piece of tape is useful to cover the HD hole at the 1.4MB disks. When I was short of HD disks, I used to drill holes in the 2DD disks, making them "high density" such, but thats a different story.

Here: [Hardware System Update 2.0.1: Disk Contents (9/93)] http://support.apple.com/kb/TA30211 is where it mentions the extension. It is also mentioned here: [System Update 2.0.1: ReadMe File (8/95)] http://support.apple.com/kb/TA34220 which I think refers to the same software. And I think I have found it: http://macintoshgarden.org/apps/macintosh-system-71x (Yes, I have indeed found it!!!) Another thing I completely forgot about System 7 and 7.1 is the fact that every model of Macintosh had its own icon in "About This Macintosh...". I missed when Apple actually put in all that effort to customise the system software to individualise every model Apple made and sold. I also miss the Australian (International) English localisations that have no longer appeared since Mac OS 8! Thanks for the pointer! That was a big help! --tonza

I was missing the "About this Macintosh" output as well. You will certainly know this one: http://download.info.apple.com/Apple_Support_Area/Apple_Software_Updates/MultiCountry/Macintosh/Other_System/Keyboard_Layouts/
