iMacs cannot run System 7. I'm not really even sure they can emulate it - you would need Mac OS X, an emulator program, and a Mac boot ROM. Frankly it doesn't sound very appealing at all.

The earliest iMac requires at least System 8.1. The first slot loading requires 8.6 and up. So System 7 natively is out. If you do decide to run native in 8.x, many of the upgrades for System 7 on this site are also applicable for System 8.

You don't need Mac OS X. Just Google "Mini vMac". The current version is still compiled for the Classic Mac OS, including 68k macs as well! It can run all the way up to System 7.5.5. All you need is a ROM, which is not that hard to find.

Hello, may I suggest to post your emulation related questions at "http://www.emaculation.com/forum" too? I recieved very much help there. As far as I can tell, for emulating System7, an old Win2K or XP computer would do best. Anything from a Pentium3 with 650MHz clock speed is sufficient to run 68k or PowerMac emulation at moderate speed in fullscreen mode. If you don't grab very exotic hardware, you will also have a working sound system, just in case you would like to play some old games. Good luck to you!

.dsk is an extension often used by disk images of Apple II disks.

".dsk" is a pretty generic term that refers to disk image formats used by emulators. VMWare server uses dsk images for instance. Apple // emulators mount dsk images with are emulations of Apple // disks. Vice looks for dsk images that are emulated CBM 1541 disk. This site focuses on using OS 7.6.1 and while some of that is no doubt done in emulation the site does not provides any specifics related to emulation. And certainly no software in .dsk format, nor any ROMs needed for Mac emulation. As noted in earlier posts there are sites dedicated to emulation, which can provide more information. Emulated systems are typically very different from the running the same system on the hardware designed for it. One could have problems configuring the system, but that might be related to the emulator softwore, or the even the host system. Very good systems that natively run OS 7.6 are readily available and quite inexpensive. Personally I would encourge anyone interested in exploring OS 7.6 to do so on the hardware that was designed to support it. bill
