Hi! Everyone, I recently acquired a Macintosh Performa 630CD with system 7.5.x witch I will update to 7.6.1 and I was wondering how to connect this computer to the internet via ehernet. This model of Mac did come with Ehternet, can I run an adapter through the apple talk modem or can I install an ethernet card? PS. It's a good machine. |

That was the last of the 68K line of machines and the first Mac to use an IDE buss for a hard drive. It was available as a Quadra, LC, and Performa. Some variations came with a DOS card, while others came with TV tuner cards. It does not have ethernet capabilities built in. It lacks NuBus slots, but it does have a stock LC PDS slot. There were several companies that made network cards for the LC PDC slot. The LEM SwapList is a good place to look for older Mac hardware. A search through eBay would also probably turn up a network card. Our sister site Info-Mac also has a classified section and you may wish to post a wanted ad there. If you have a Mac with both a serial port an ethernet port, you can use that machine to bridge AppleTalk to ethernet. You could then connect to the internet through the bridge machine. I just barely got my hands on a Performa 550, and purchase the following network card (there are more left in this auction): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260606210605&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT#ht_616wt_1104 Total was around $20. It was brand new, with driver disk and manual. Might be worth checking to see if this card will work in the system you have.

The Performa 630 has a 33MHz Motorola 68LC040 processor. Amazon still lists AppleTalk/Ethernet Bridges. bill

He is not. The 63x series is 68k indeed. They're very nice I have a few, one with a complete TV tuner setup.

Your Performa has a CommSlot I slot. This card is a CommSlot II card. As far as I know it would not be compatible, sorry. You can probably do a more thorough search, I seem to recall that some of the CS II cards were compatible with CS I slots, although perhaps the compatibility only goes the other way. bill
